I think that well-known themes are amazing for recall or reminders. We usually hear the Bond theme in Bond trailers or Williams' Star War themes in those trailers. I'm really surprised that we didn't hear a bit of Goldsmith's iconic First Blood themes somewhere in that trailer.

The last Rambo film IMHO was just a nasty, unpleasant, poorly written, and poorly scripted failure of a film. It tried so hard to come off as "realistic" yet in many ways it was more glorified, with its ridiculous OTT violence, and more offensive than "Rambo III" could even manage. The shutter speed effect that was constantly employed during action scenes also made me want to vomit all over Stallone's best suit.

I'd rather watch Rocky V again... yes, you heard me right. Not Sly's finest hour. roll eyes

Am tired of reading critiques of realistic violence. Rather than arguing specific points pertaining to the realism, let me simply ask this... was Saving Private Ryan a realistic depiction of violence? If yes, then so is Rambo, Hacksaw Ridge, etcetera etcetera etcetera.

Perhaps an objection to heroics surrounding & engulfing that violence is a better argument to make, but stop attacking the appropriate depictions themselves. Newsflash: violence is violent.

Tone is everything. The problem with this comparison is that Saving Private Ryan wasn't trying to be a kickass action movie. It wasn't an action movie at all. It was a tribute to those who endured such events and was pretty character driven. Rambo IV was set up for the "That's awesome!" crowd who enjoyed the comic books that the second and third installments in the series were. Imagine a James Bond movie with unsimulated sex scenes and you'll get the picture.

He used the predictable main Rambo theme yeah, but I was disappointed that he didn’t bother to explore the “Rambo doing cool stuff” motif. You know that 5 note motif that plays anytime he starts sneaking around or sprinting into action. Missed opportunity.

On choice of composer. If TPTB want to keep the score more old school I think either Bruce Broughton and Alan Silvestri (though both are highly unlikely to get the scoring gig) would be interesting candidates. Since the Rambo V trailer seems be giving people Logan vibes Marco Beltrami would be another interesting candidate. After all Goldsmith was also his mentor. So he'll probably do the film and Goldsmith justice at the same time.

Id like to see Tyler do this one.He paid homage to Goldsmiths themes in Rambo 4 while adding his own unique flavour.

I still cannot understand why Stallone went with such a lame title for this fifth film.

Rambo: The Long Road, something like that would have been far better suited.

First Blood made sense, Last Blood comes off like a pun or parody name.

Silvestri would actually have been amazing for this.

I actually agree with many of your points, mostly pertaining to the title. While I'm here, I will again complain that this doesn't even look like Rambo.

Exactly. It looks more like HOME ALONE, only if it was RATED R and crossed with LOGAN.

So, I'm not the only one who's into wishful thinking. I state on multiple occasions that if I were making a Star Wars film, I'd hire John Scott (I also suggested him for Bond, given his connection). Then others suggest J.A.C. Redford for James Bond, and now Jeff Atmajian for Rambo.

Maybe afterwards we can all get together at The Village and eat some fried unicorns seasons with Leprechaun dust. ;-)

Really guys, this has become a very bad habit. The movie isn't even out yet and already the knives are out...

I vote for Marco Beltrami.

He took over Goldsmith's music in [the Omen]
and was good in [Die Hard] series and [Terminator].

Sometimes all you need is the title.....

I won't be running to the cinema too see this - its nothing more than window-dressing. Tyler was the previous scorer & he did ok he tried his best being faithful too JG theme it worked pretty-well - I like his texture sometimes in his work not road-movies though.

This has long been one of John Scott's white whales, so it would be nice if Stallone would give him a call, for old time's sake. They went to high school together.

I'm late to this thread, but is this a joke? Scott is 16 years older.........sorry if I missed something!

People who've mentioned Scott are deadly-serious they want to see him in a big-project age isn't a barrier - I also reckon his tool-box can handle all-sorts why not Bond.

I'd like to see Brian Tyler or Marco Beltrami score this.

Failing that, just someone who can compose an action score with an orchestra. Imagine if they got Christopher Young? Never gonna happen though.

Using Jerry's themes is an absolute must!

Sadly we'll probably end up with another obnoxious and predictable sound design score from Lorne Balfe or Junkie XL.

Joking aside, if Ted Kotcheff had gotten his first choice composer back in 1981/2, I'm sure John Scott would have written the original FIRST BLOOD score.

In the Wishful Thinking Department:

In my thread on "Walker, Texas Ranger" scoring, I noted once or twice, when com-plimenting Christopher L. Stone on hi scoring, he'd be a good choice for a "Rambo" film.

Can’t wait to read the reactions once Lorne Balfe’s announced!

I enjoyed his score for MI Fallout so I'd actually be ok with this.
