Does anyone own the FSM Valley of the Kings score/cd? I've sampled some of the music and really liked it.

Yup, it's great. Love Rozsa in exotic mode. Though all of the FSM Rozsa releases are pretty much must-haves, the only one I really consider a higher priority than Valley of the Kings is Knights of the Round Table. Yavar

Yavar Yavar, between you and Sir McCrum my pocketbook is groaning...GOT to go find KotRT now!

Does anyone own the FSM Valley of the Kings score/cd? I've sampled some of the music and really liked it. Hello all! I've been absent for a while (techno-detox), but I'm slowly getting back into the idea of spending hours glued to a computer screen. But enough of me. W.A. asks about the FSM VALLEY OF THE KINGS. I concur with Yavar and others. I spent literally years putting off getting this, simply because it's a bit under the radar when compared to other Rózsa scores. I hear very little discussion of it. Anyway, I kind of ended up buying it blind, to fill out an order which included stuff I really KNEW I would like, and I was absolutely thrilled by VALLEY OF THE KINGS. I think it's fabulous music, a really underrated gem. And although I can't claim to be an audiophile, the recording sounds terrfic to my ears. Yes! Sounds terrific. I've got quite the line up here; besides some select Rozsa concert works (thanks to both here and especially the Rozsa Society Forum) and Knights of the Round Table purchased first, with Valley of the Kings next up. Thanks to everybody!

I ordered Bartok and Rozsa Viola Concertos from Hyperion Records, also vol. 2 of the Chandos Orchestral. Next up for concert will be the more recent Heifitz Violin Concerto CD (the Naxos isn't bad at all btw). From folks both here and at the Society, it seems the Chandos orchestral volumes are all more than worth having.

Just ordered the FSM Knights of the Round Table/King's Thief, psyched!

Good! But I shouldn't have distracted you from picking up the Treasury set while it isn't astronomical. You really should prioritize it. Yavar

Indeed on both counts. The FSM KOTRT was the first FSM I ever bought so it holds a special place for though, but the Rozsa Treasury should definitely be a priority. On a related note, if you do get the Treasury, you'll get a second recording of Knights with it (the regular FSM contains the film recording conducted by Rozsa and Johnny Green, while the Treasury recording was done in the UK by Muir Mathieson for contractual reasons. My personal preference is for the US recording).

Just ordered the FSM Knights of the Round Table/King's Thief, psyched! My recommendation is to also buy DIANE. One of my favourite Rozsa historical scores with some of his most lushly passionate music. Both Diane and Lost Weekend are two I haven't gotten around to checking out yet (LW is a really good movie though imo). It's mostly because I've been so in love with the epic and swashbuckling side of Rozsa's writing. Another one is Jungle Book. I do know that my appreciation continues to escalate for the maestro, I'm not a dedicated Rozsa-phile! Looking back on my film music collection, it's overrun with Rozsa and Herrmann (but of course I have other great stuff like Close Encounters, the Omen, Gone with the Wind, Rebecca, Silver Chalice, the Robe, Cleopatra, Planet of the Apes...).

I've got some more great Rozsa on the way: Rozsa conducts Rozsa: Backround to Violence, etc. as well as All the Brothers Were Valiant. I bought Alfred Newman's Greatest Story to keep things at least SOMEwhat eclectic lol!

All the Brothers Were Valiant? The definitive, most complete, best sounding version of that is on the Miklos Rozsa Treasury! Stop spending and start saving, my friend. You've got enough to keep you busy for a while. https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/notes/all_the_brothers_were_valiant.html P.S. Had a chance to listen to Knights of the Round Table (or Basil's Sword and Sorcery Spectacular) yet? Yavar

I guess I'm just really impatient...I've gotten so much inspiration from Rozsa's music for my own combinations. For film scorers, only Bernard Herrmann has been supplied such creative motivation. REALLY like Knights of the Round Table (it was fun picking out a couple of familiar germ motifs from all the wonderful music). I also was surprised to like very much the "b" side, King's Thief. More of a swashbuckling side to Rozsa. That whole cd is very addicting imo. Thanks for reminding me about Sword and Sorcery!

Here's a link to an article I wrote some years ago on the life and career of Dr. Rozsa. I know that many of you have seen this piece before but, in light of the obvious interest in his music and remarkable output, I thought that I'd throw it into the mix once more. http://thethunderchild.com/Movies/VertliebViews/RoszaStory.html Steve

Today I received Rozsa's Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover, Lydia, and Crisis, and was delighted. I want see Lydia now, Rozsa was quite the composer for piano!
