Sure, I'll post it on the other side of the board so not to derail this thread to much.

I'm happy to be the butt of anybody's joke, but I don't think I ever said anything except that I didn't get a connection from "something" to "Somewhere Out There." Yavar explained the other reasons it would be "Tail," and I accepted it.

However, I am wrong about a variety of things every single day, so I'm happy to take this one, too!

Thank You Intrada!
Another (major) Holy Grail released.

I only wish that we could have the instrumental cues of the songs (especially "There Are No Cats In America") - as I love that big orchestral burst at the end. It would have been wonderful to hear that on its own).

Another reason is, that if I play cartoon songs like this; people will consider me childish (I have not grown up) - it is embarrassing - as I can't turn it up loud enough - (I know there are always headphones available) - but I am just saying... I can't even listen to the "The Sound Of Music" for those valid reasons - so I do wish that instrumentals could have been provided!

I always had that wish; for this particular score; as the songs (and orchestra backing them up) are amazing - it is - The London Symphony - and I wish maybe; perhaps - in a future release (if I am still alive)... I can own it!

An easy way to get me to NOT buy a release is to put music that doesn't have all the instruments on it.

solium, is that why the American Tail Blu-ray is missing all these frames? Distracting. Sad.

I don't know about missing frames but the powers in charge destroyed the audio track, which I've documented in great length a few years back. You have to get the VHS of the film in order to see the unaltered theatrical version.

We're living in a Horner renassaince! Hard to believe how many nice people here used to despise him.

Waiting for the Zimmer renaissance (we're almost there).

I too would prefer instrumental versions of the songs, but my sense is they would have included them if they had access. They aren't recording this from scratch like Tadlow, which allows Tadlow to include instrumental versions of songs. The lack of instrumental versions isn't going to impact my choice to purchase it though. What I really want is all the remastered and expanded music and it is all there.

Back in the latter half of the 80’s, after I finally got my own car and a part time job, I remember making the pilgrimage to the closest Tower Records, about 20 miles from my house. I didn’t have a CD player, so I scoured the cassette soundtrack section for anything by James Horner. The jewels I picked up were Gorky Park, Aliens, Red Heat, Cocoon The Return, The Land Before Time and, finally, An American Tail. What an amazing time for me, grabbing up all of this “Old School Horner.” All very similar yet distinctive. I had the tape of AAT for years and the hiss on that bad boy was oppressive, but I always loved it.

Very few composers make me smile like Horner and that period in particular was a huge favorite of mine. This is a must-have for me.

Why a such volume increase on this new Intrada edition : around 6 dB more than the original MCA edition ?
I am agreed with Nono about about hot mastering or volume increase that reduce the musicality of the recordings. I don't think Maestro James Horner would be ok with this new mastering... Please keep the music alive and stop over master and mix our beloved scores...

Original MCA :

bcommunal: I am not an audio engineer, but in crude terms -- many CDs produced in the 1980s were mastered at what we would today consider an unusually low volume. It's not a question of these CDs having better dynamic range ... they simply neglected to take advantage of the full upper bound offered by the format. Look how the peaks on your first waveform never even approach the ceiling or floor, even when the track is at its loudest. (This can actually make for a LESS musical listening experience, as you must sometimes turn up the volume to enjoy the quieter passages and deal with the resulting background hiss or absence of detail.)

The problem with many modern releases is NOT that they are louder, per se. (That can be fixed with a simple twist of the volume knob.) It's that the dynamic range has been severely and artificially compressed, and the waveform consequently flattened or even "brickwalled." The waveforms you post show clearly that this has NOT occurred with Intrada's new release of AN AMERICAN TAIL. On the contrary, the ratio between the peaks and the quieter passages seems much the same as it was. I can detect no compression to speak of. The overall volume has been increased, yes, but nothing musical appears to have been lost. So I'd advise saving your ammunition for releases that actually merit the criticism.

I am agreed with you Wedge but I can't imagine a such volume increase (6dB !!) does not affect the music during the mastering. I personally try to increase the volume of the MCA tracks and the low parts were still lower than the Intrada tracks, so the dynamic range is probably not exactly the same than the original album. But yes my friend, it's not the worst case in the history of film music mastering ;o)

What a very odd series of comments.

That waveform looks perfectly fine to me. Lovely dynamic range! The MCA CD sounds old and dated now.

And wanting the songs without the singing? That's not how they were conceived. If you bought a pop album would you also expect instrumental versions of each song?

This board is mad sometimes.
