The American marketers were worried kids in the U.S. wouldn't know what a philosopher was.
Actually it's because of UK law that prohibits certain words in titling aimed at children. They had a similar issue with Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles.
The word "philosopher"? Wouldn't "sorcerer" be worse, in that case? You meant U.S. law, I assume? That still makes no sense, to be honest.
No, its complicated.
First off, the original title is indeed philosophers stone. Two reasons for this is that the Philosopher's Stone is a European myth within alchemy. It was suppose to hold the powers of transmutation or something? So part of the name change is because of location, just like how no one outside of the USA knew what a Hoosier was, so they changed the movie title to Best Shot overseas.
Secondly, there is a "protection of minors" law in the UK that prevents certain wording, language or material when being "sold" to an age group. For instance, the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles weren't allowed to *show* nunchucks in any episode. The U.K. distributors had to edit every episode so Michaelangelo didn't use his signature weapon. Similarly, you're not allowed to use the term sorcery (or sorcerer) when marketing certain types of books. I'm not sure about the inside of the book per se but the cover can't have certain words due to this long standing law.
So while, yes, Rowling did suggest the American title to "jazz it up" for American kids, to say American children wouldn't Be interested in a philosopher anything is is akin to saying British children are too stupid to know what a sorcerer is.

Interesting. After the first season or two Michaelangelo switched to a grappling hook and I always assumed it was due to some sort of issue with American kids using nunchucks on their classmates (even plastic ones). Now I guess it was easier on the UK to eventually just drop them altogether.
