Listening to the clip that someone posted over at JWFAN (you figure it out - http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/28625-justin-hurwitzs-first-man-2018/&page=2&tab=comments#comment-1533593), it's absolutely clear that Hurwitz is copying John Powell's United 93 almost exactly. Such a shame. You'd think with their clout, they'd have the ability to go beyond the lazy temp tracking, but nope!

Shaun's right. Other than the theremin, this is almost exactly like The End from United 93: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZXjdKKa3jw Is this the clearest case of plagiarism since 300?

Ok, I must confess... I have a problem!

If the music featured in those clips form the post above is indeed the music that Hurwitz has composed for the film... I like it!

From what I've read as comments and from what Thor said, I tought I wouldn't like it. However, this doesn't sound as what I was presuming it will be. I can't tell for sure from those short clips burried under effects and dialogue, but to my ears this sounds very orchestral and with some great ostinatos.

Don't wanna speak for Shaun, but I'm guessing he meant the composer and director, possibly the producers too.

I would imagine with "their" clout all these people had the power to do exactly what they did, which appears to be hiring somebody to write a score that sounded exactly like something else that they liked. They're probably happy as can be. Film score fans have the basic flawed assumption that great original film music is always the goal when more often than not its a serendipity.

Doesn't make it less bullshit to me, though!

Okay, I just told them and they say sorry, it won't happen again.

I like Hurwitz's Whiplash but can't say I'm knocked out from what I've heard of this so far. Have to hear more to make a proper assessment however.

I do so love it when a young'un discovers the theremin. Attaboy, Justin.

Now if you'll excuse me, I just listened to "The Landing" and I have to go retrieve my socks from the other end of the room.

Yeah I hate to say that the brass/synth? arrangements in The Landing just don't work for me. Something about the orchestration when the horns take the theme while the rest of the brass(/synth hits?) punctuate things, it's trying for something different at a moment that screams for classic Movie orchestration a la John Williams. I love what he's attempting with the ostinato type theme building on itself but the payoff just wasn't there (for me) =/

That second cue is nice. Harp and theremin? That's a really neat combination. Certainly a more inspired musical choice than I've heard in a mainstream film score in quite a while, and the plaintive melody the theremin carries seems nice enough - if not exactly an ear-worm. "The Landing" wasn't quite as successful for me, but again, at least we hear a little more craft and nuance than usual. I love when just the English Horn is left carrying the arpeggiating melody at the end. Would be nice to hear more like that.

I'll withhold judgement until I've heard more, but this certainly isn't terrible so far.

Just came back from the theater and the score works beautifully. Overall very small and intimate with Karen's theme and all of its many variations played mostly on solo harp (and later developed for solid size orchestra, percussions and synths in the Landing sequence) and the secondary theme that could make Ennio Morricone proud and could easily incorporate the voice of Eda Dell'Orso but in the FIRST MAN's case it is played almost exclusively by theremin.

Highlights include tracks Karen, Docking Waltz, Apollo 11 Launch, The Landing and Crater.

Well... that's more complete version of Karen's theme the whole track is based on... in its other variations (and there's MANY of them throughout the whole movie) it is mostly played by solo harp... you'll love that ;-)

Considering the movis is rather small and often short with hand held camera with a lot of details, it NEVER calls for anything ala John Williams. razz

I get what you're saying, I didn't mean louder than what was there, just more satisfyingly orchestrated!

These two tracks work well enough for me.

What I had heard before wasn’t inspiring but this is promising.

I’m a sucker for strange orchestrations like the harp and theramin duet.

Looking forward to the movie and score.

From 4:40. As I suspected, Powell's The End from United 93 was used by Hurwitz for Apollo 11 Launch
