I went to a screening of this today and really liked the score. A lot of it is very familiar Elfman in fantasy awe and wonder mode (like Oz) and some lovely tender emotional stuff in the first half. Even if a lot of it is perhaps a tad overfamiliar (but enjoyable) it’s rich with highlights like an energetic opening montage cue (2nd track on the album), the lovely soaring theme, a fantastic rendition of pink elephants (this will be a favourite for Elfman fans), the old fashioned breakout cue and a very bombastic finale. There’s also a tonne of source music, not sure if all of it is Elfman but some of it clearly is, and he’s obviously enjoying working in the classic circus sound. I very much looking forward to hearing the album in 2 weeks! Can't wait for that opening montage track (heard part of it at Disneyland), as well as the "Soaring Suite"!

If I chose to be pedantic, I might ask how anybody knows what Elfman will do for this film, or whether the film will be any good. But I am choosing not to be pedantic, so I'm not bringing any of that up. The Schiffy Recusal

This will be Elfman channeling Big Top Pee-wee, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, BeetleJuice, etc. ... And the bad news...? Fair enough. Obviously I'm speaking for myself. I don't care for his "lalala" music. Your profile lists 20 of your favourite composers. Elfman isn't on that list. Why are you commenting on this thread then? You clicked on Soliums profile?! Brave man! I'm too scared to look.

Not expecting anything approaching Oliver Wallace, but it'll be a moderately enjoyable listen at least.

I saw the movie earlier today, and while there were a couple of really good, classically burtonesque scenes, it was overall very disappointing. So LOUD and NOISY all the time (not helped by the fact that the projectionist turned the volume all the way up)! And -- as with most "big" Hollywood scores from Elfman in the last decade and a half -- just a couple of highlights (like the opening train cue, the waltz for the acrobat woman and the 'pink elephant' circus number), but the rest was all over the place; noisy, whimsical and grating, really. As a massive Elfman fan, I really want to be the bearer of better news, but I can't. I'll continue to look forward to his next indie project instead, where he's really at his best right now.

Well, Thor, you are actually the bearer of great news! If you didn't liked it, that means the score is SUPERB! Yes, it might be loud and noisy, but that's what probably makes it a classical Elfman effort worth hearing. Here is where Elfman is at his very best, not at some forgettable indie project. But of course, I tend to forget that nowadays only you could be exited by something so unbearable as say Elfman's own Unknown Known, or even worst... Zombie Zombie.

Elfman needs an intervention to stop him from doing big blockbuster stuff, at least for a while. He needs to focus exclusively on indie films, concert works and other arenas where his true value currently lies. Preferably as calm and textural as possible. Yep, that’s where all the money is! You should talk to his manager, his agent, and his accountant about this - I’m sure they’ll all be interested in getting his career back on-track.
