Excellent episode. David needs his own podcast.

The Newman interview was one of the best podcasts I've heard -- fascinating, at times even compelling. Bravo! Thanks, Paul! Excellent episode. David needs his own podcast. Thanks, Ryan! I suspect David is far too busy with a variety of projects to tackle a regular podcast himself, though I'd certainly be there as a listener if he ever felt like it. Luckily, we have high hopes that his schedule will allow him to join us again on The Goldsmith Odyssey, as he's expressed an interest in doing so. I was lucky to catch David when he had a good window to have this conversation, though. I hope you all check out the new interview that just came out with conductor Justin Freer (doing Rudy live in LA this weekend on the 30th). Like David he's conducted a lot of live film music concerts and we were able to pick up some interesting threads that started in the earlier conversation. He's less animated (more laid back) initially than David was, but as the interview goes on I think you'll find that he perks up quite a bit, and we ended up having quite the fascinating conversation on a variety of topics besides just Rudy. He shared a lot of personal anecdotes about Jerry from the last years of his life, which were really special. Here's the link, since I think Jens forgot to share it: http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1012976-odyssey-interviews-justin-freer Yavar

I should note for everyone that we just re-published the Justin Freer interview (at the same link), and added more original compositions of his to the conversation about them in the last 15 minutes of the podcast -- if you liked the bit of his music we included before, go check out these unreleased exclusive pieces...one has an LA Confidential flavor to it! I think he took some of Jerry's "no bullshit" pills before the interview. It was great. Yavar

I enjoyed very much your last episode! Thanks! Are you referring to the recent Gold Nugget episode(s) from the past couple weeks? If so, I love them too! I think they are the best mini-sodes yet! (Well, due to David joining Jens on the last one about [Redacted], it's actually longer than some of our early regular episodes!) I have long wanted to more widely promote this series of mini-eps, but Jens for a long time had the perspective that they were bonus content for our regular listeners, and he wanted to see how many people noticed them on their own, having them be a fun surprise. And now I've gone and spoiled it, but I don't care -- everyone should check out the Gold Nugget series if they haven't. Episode 4 *really* kicked it up a notch, and the super-secret Episode 5 where our once and future editors (Jens and David) joined each other for a fun surprise is great too! Thusfar the series has been about Japan's relationship to Jerry Goldsmith, and vice-versa...but going forward it will cover other topics as I think the Japan subject reached it's climax/conclusion with the latest. Check these eps out here, everyone, and let us know what you think (again, the last two are the best if you only have limited time and don't care as much about context with the previous three): http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/735931-gold-nugget-1-big-in-japan http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/856650-gold-nugget-2-hollywood-symphonic-spectacular http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/876099-gold-nugget-3-free-as-the-wind-tribute-to-jerry-goldsmith http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1024883-gold-nugget-4-in-japan-2003 http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1041461-gold-nugget-5-redacted Hello friends, Hello, (Member)! Do you still plan to explore the television work of Jerry Goldsmith? You mean, continue exploring it? Because we've already put out quite a few TV episodes covering: two Climax!s, two Perry Masons, two (sorta three) Playhouse 90s, a Peck's Bad Girl, FOUR Twilight Zones (some of our best work, I thought), three Gunsmokes, two Have Gun — Will Travels, a couple unaired pilots, music he wrote for a couple Lineups, and the Black Saddle theme! So I'd say we've been exploring quite a bit... When will you start the 1961 year with Thriller, The Twilight Zone, Rawhide? Thanks for your feedback. We will start the 1961 year with Thriller on (checks calendar) February 7th, 2019. http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/944720-episode-17-thriller-the-poisoner-1961 Okay, okay....I'm giving you a bit of a hard time, I admit. I appreciate that you are anxious about the main show because that was the last one we did — with two (big) interview eps and two (wonderful) Nugget eps in the meantime — presumably not exactly what you were hoping for. But rest assured the regular episodes will return, and soon. The truth is that we already recorded our first episode with David, the new cohost and editor, a couple months ago! (This covered Jerry's final work in 1960, his first Thriller score, "The Cheaters".) And early on in this month, we even recorded our third Twilight Zone podcast with special guest Tim Greiving (covering "Dust" and "Back There"). Where are these episodes, you ask? Well, David can explain further if he feels so inclined, but suffice to say that both professional and personal commitments have delayed his editing work until recently. Yavar

I'm finishing episode 13 today and just went cuckoo over the cues (and laughed at the suspected misnomers). Some of the more suspenseful cues really had me wanting more (like, a whole album lol!) Whenever I think about that CBS library my imagination makes it seem like this vast, pre-fire Alexandrian universe. Your show is helping to compartmentalize things, and bring the music therein to life. One thing I'm positive about is that this show would make a huge hit in Film music graduate classes. You folks are delightfully exhaustive, I know for a fact I wouldn't know even a tenth of what I know about JG's music and times today without the Odyssey.

Kinda worried you guys will be in your 80s by the time the Odyssey is finished.

Yavar Let's just hope you will keep a regular schedule as last year? I'm looking for the last batch of Twilight Zone and the Rawhide score with great expectations. I listened again to your old output (Gunsmoke and the CBS Library): a real treat. Anything from CBS is welcome, by the way. Keep up the good work.

I'm finishing episode 13 today and just went cuckoo over the cues (and laughed at the suspected misnomers). Some of the more suspenseful cues really had me wanting more (like, a whole album lol!) I'm not surprised, since some of them are a mite Herrmannesque! I'm glad that you enjoyed these rare exclusive Goldsmith cues David put together, despite some of them not being as distinctly Goldsmith as his credited work. But there are some real GEMS in Part 2 of the CBS Music Library ep, such as Autumn Love...for those who want a link: http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/812543-episode-13-cbs-music-library-spectacular-part-2 Whenever I think about that CBS library my imagination makes it seem like this vast, pre-fire Alexandrian universe. You folks are delightfully exhaustive, I know for a fact I wouldn't know even a tenth of what I know about JG's music and times today without the Odyssey. Thanks WagnerAlmighty. As always, your support, encouragement, and compliments are much appreciated. Do keep sharing your thoughts here as you work your way through Episodes 14-17 (and 18 and 19 will be out in the next month; I promise). And I'd love to hear what you think of the David Newman interview too, of course. Thanks to Graham (very happy you've subscribed!) and the others who have chimed in with their compliments... Let's just hope you will keep a regular schedule as last year? I'm looking for the last batch of Twilight Zone and the Rawhide score with great expectations. I listened again to your old output (Gunsmoke and the CBS Library): a real treat. Anything from CBS is welcome, by the way. Keep up the good work. Thanks, (Member) -- it's a lot of work to do these. Not just the hours of prep work and hours of recording time, but many more hours of editing time. We will keep as regular a schedule as we can, but we are planning to keep to a three week schedule rather than two week like last year. Rest assured that we are covering literally *everything* by Jerry that we can find, including his CBS work. I've even already planned out our Appendices on his radio works, based on what we've been able to find so far! It may be 15+ years before we get to them, of course... Yesssssss. Kinda worried you guys will be in your 80s by the time the Odyssey is finished. It is quite the daunting project. We'll be spending a year covering his 1961 TV output, alone. By my estimation I'll be nearing 50 by the time we finish this thing (I'm 33 right now). But when we are finished, it will stand as the greatest comprehensive deep-dive testament that I think any composer has ever received, even outside of film music. (I would totally subscribe to a similar podcast going through the works of, say, Sibelius...in case any interested parties are reading this, haha!) Yavar

I enjoyed very much your last episode! Thanks! Are you referring to the recent Gold Nugget episode(s) from the past couple? I'm sorry for the late reply, YES, that's what I'm referring to. Oh cool! I will have to let Jens know that his Nugget efforts are appreciated, since he hasn't checked in on this thread in a while. It was feeling the agony as the next track of the CD was revealed :-) I'm trying to understand the "agony" (The Agony and the Ecstasy? ) Are you saying you were excited to hear what each new surprise selection was, on the mystery CD? I urge listeners to listen to all the episodes and not only the ones analyzing Goldsmith's works. For instance I also enjoyed the interviews you conducted with Bruce Kimmel and David Newman. In general, I think you are all doing a wonderful job. Thanks so much. It means a lot to have an appreciative listener like you. Glad you enjoyed those interviews. Yavar
