Isn't there a possibility that film scores could be in there?

If the fire was in the same building as the copying office, then yes. That would be a real shame, as I have been trying to get all of Bernard Herrmann’s original manuscripts for the Alfred Hichcock Hour series for possible new recordings. I sure hope they didn't go up in flames

That makes several hundreds of us.

The reality is that, sadly, we've had vault fires for 100 years in this industry, and we'll continue to have more in the years to come.

What is gone in this fire joins the thousands of film/video elements lost in the past, either by fire or attrition, and any music elements lost will join those which have been systematically lost in fires or intentionally "dumped" by their owners.

There is nothing that can be done about this now and in the future by ANY OF US---only by the OWNERS of the material who actually want to take foolproof preservation steps and make back-ups.

As an audience, we can only be blessed with those things we have in our collections already and the things we may get in the future---and we must treasure each and every one of them for the rarities they are.

As for backlot fires, over the years we've had myriad fires at Universal, MGM, Warner Bros, and others, including Columbia---who it always seemed to me had a backlot fire, burning sets not currently in use, whenever a year-end financial statement went into the red. smile Universal can either rebuild the sets, clear the land for another planned high-rise, or move to YOUR house to shoot location scenes for the latest Jennifer Aniston movie. smile

I hope the Fahrenheit 451 scores don’t look like our cover art and my avatar here.

A Universal representative is now saying that the feature film elements are stored separately, in lead-lined concrete (probably built for nitrate) vaults and are not involved.

Just a question---wouldn't the videos stored in a Universal Music Group vault be music videos?

It will be interesting to hear what Doug and Roger from intrada have to say about this because they apparently are having access to that affected vault.

Lets all start panicing?
Least this got us off the clue thread for some time!

Firstly, lets hope no scores were lost and secondly, lets hope no people were killed.

No offense..but aren't we all going to be dead one day? So...does it really matter? Considering Universal...we'll all be dead before they release anything else anyway...knowing their practices.

Go enjoy your wife, kids, grandkids...or even a nice day at the park for cryin' out loud lol! You know...the things that actually matter in life.

Yes, before the hysteria sets in, let us first understand that Nikki Finke is one of the biggest idiots EVER. She is a hysteric about everything. A "source" told her. Her "sources" have proven time and time again to be completely inaccurate. So, wait until someone who actually knows something tells the story.

Nobody has anything to worry about; I'm sure all of the film score masters have been discarded years ago!

I have to admit (once I learned there was no human tragedy associated with this in terms of loss of life, which had to be the first concern for all of us) my biggest concern in following this news all afternoon has been trying to figure out if what they mean by "duplicates" of the video reels that were lost means that Universal already has another set of transfers off the film negatives that they can immediately utilize for planned DVD releases etc. (I have specifically in mind the fact that Universal is using these kinds of elements to license out a number of their vintage TV shows to third parties, where the film negatives themself are not used at all) or if the reference to "duplicates" just refers to the negatives themself, which would mean a more complex scenario of having to start completely from scratch off the negatives for everything that had been previously transferred.

I'm sorry to hear that a lot of vintage music might have been lost, and hope that the losses are less than some of these rumors indicate.

It's not that bad. LP masters are important, yes, very important. But at least we have the vinyl itself, and many labels have proven that using the LP as the source is still top quality. And if original score masters are involved, Universal is not cooperative anyway.

Mr. Stromberg,

I sincerely hope that the Bernard Herrmann manuscripts for THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR have not been lost, as I have hoped for a soundtrack of that material for a very long time. I'm concerned, but not allowing myself to panic.

In theory, any loss of original materials (tapes, films, videos, scores, etc.) is a shame. But as a practical matter, we would likely see the release of only a tiny fraction of this material in our lifetime. If they can't release something that was lost, they can release something else. But past history has shown that they probably won't release much at all.

I'm concerned, but not allowing myself to panic.

John: "John, I don't allow you to panic."
John: "But all those film scores lost, I can't stand it, I think I'm running like crazy around the house !"
John: "No you don't ! I DON'T ALLOW YOU TO PANIC !!!"
John: "O.k."

If it's true, it's their own damnded fault for not archiving the material.

Let's face it: every film score ever recorded at Universal studios is lost forever and will not be heard by any film music fan again.

Also the complete stock of any soundtrack CD still in print was destroyed.

The fire was so hot it even affected the Universal CDs already in your collection.

Not to wax philosphically here, but perhaps this is Kharma. They sit on their treasure only to lose it....

Well, I'll be sitting here in Dallas, Texas planning on my next coastal vacation to Arizona. Seems like only yesterday I lived there. It'll be nice to go back and see the sea...
