That Zalmanoz character (or its many previous incarnations) is pretty easy to spot. Most definitely a MAN (and not a woman), and obviously struggling with some issues on a personal level. It's not merely an Iran-western world culture crash going on. But I admit that I find myself drawn in many times....probably there's this innate desire in all of us to help, or to solve quiz challenges, that overrides that awareness.

I do agree, however, that it's sometimes difficult to separate between a legit person and - say - a spambot, especially as AI technology is progressing rapidly. But after a few back and forths, I find that fairly easy to spot too. Then it's a matter of ignoring it, reporting it or having a bit of fun with it.

On this occasion it turned out just the right button press made the veil of deceit come crumbling down.

But this character began as Mucrim demanding help with themes recorded off Turkish tv and quickly got obsessive and nasty if ignored or nobody had the answer. And he came back with more and more until it was like endless spam. I believe he has been back several times over the years with different log ins. So watch for that same m.o, whatever country it claims to be from.

Something else to watch for with those type of posters - feigning excessive gratitude and sick-bucket out-of-proportion warmth. Oh thank you thank you, my best friend, you are so kind, I love you and I want to have your babies etc.
Another dead giveaway. Lol

Up to a point a few years ago I did not only changed my avatar often but also my user name until I noticed
that people here reacted more "carefully" to the new one. So I stopped that and I think I will be Grimsdyke
until I pass and then I will come back to haunt you all - just like he did big grin
Love Peter Cushing !!

I think it will be best to at least report any future incarnation of this person immediately so that the mods
are aware and things don't have to escalate again.

Being a somewhat public figure, there’s one thing I learned from dealing with internet trolls:

They *always* will have more time than you have.

Following this rather disconcerting case, I just read the Wikipedia page dedicated to the sealioning (also mentioning in a footnote the rage-baiting) and I must say that I feel too old for understanding this kind of trolling. Whenever it comes to stupid behaviours, it seems that the imagination of some people is boundless, isn't it ? I just wonder : what for ?

There have always been trolls and "jerks" on the net, and there will always be. No big deal, just move on. And if they continue to disrupt or disturb a forum, you can just block 'em or bann 'em, whatever. Sometimes they will be back, and they will usually be found out quickly and removed again.
Just don't engage with them, the one thing they hate more than anything is simply being ignored. But if you do engage them, do it for your own amusement, not theirs.

I'm sure we haven't seen the last of threads like "Can you help me identify this piece of possibly Armenian film music?" where the interaction goes from "Please my dear friends, I am so grateful" to "Die, you sicko bastards!" in not time.

One good thing has come out of this thread though: I know now of "sealioning", I was unfamiliar that this particular subset of trolls is so widespread, it has become a category.

Does anyone know how I can get a piece of music from 1969 by an Algerian composer to someone?

Thanks for the advice!
Till now I wasn´t sure how to handle this strange situation and like Laurent I had never before heard anything about that quite crazy "sealioning".

I am sure these sealioners are past members who have been banished, but they can't let go and want revenge.

Whoa, is that really him?

The ORIGINAL FSM troll, before "troll" was even a an internet word....way back in the late 90s, that! But at least he knew his way around words; being offended by him was almost an artform somehow.

I think so, Thor? I looked him up long ago, likely due to some mention in one of our Remember When threads, and because of the helpful specificity of his name to a search, and that profile had more publicly available stuff at the time. There was the vapid, assaultive tone, and scrolling down some mention of John Williams made me think this was probably our guy. Can't be certain, of course, and no more effort to investigate felt warranted.

Nicolai said I should not let these jerks rile me up. That's what my husband says to me when I'm riled and bypass the rolling pin and pick up my machete. wink

I like Grmsdyke cartoon. I don't belong to Facebook so can't translate the message.

Prince made me laugh.

Can A.I. really do all of this? I get A.I. can send us messages about free sex with girls from Russia, but this last person responded to all of our replies. I can't see a bot doing that, but maybe.

I finally did hit the abuse button. That is only the second I have ever hit is in 25 years.

I am sure our "darling" Iranian is reading this and will be back.
