A long out of print score is given a new release and people here whine about it. Yup. That's (sadly) on brand. I'm happy for those who missed it before.

Well, I wouldn't have expected anything less from Lokutus. He's made being a cantankerous git his whole personality. If he won the jackpot he'd still be more sour than a bag of lemons.

An old joke-if he fell in a barrel of tits, he's the one who would surface sucking his thumb......

I had to sell my copy of the 1st release when finances were tight. I shall definitely replace it.

I hope they rerelease The Core too!

No problem with rereleases. They allow new fans to get scores not available to them due to scarcity and extreme cost, and it gives others a welcome pause between new releases (unless they are obsessive bottle cappers, who are beyond help).

Well it is not only a rerelease… it is also the complete score with more than 79 min. Never noted that there was so much missing!
Happily double dipping on this! And also getting The Piper, of course.

Noted that Intrada is not including samples on the latest releases, but it’s ok as most know the music anyway (and there’s always some YouTube videos you can check)

Of course their new Soundtrack Trailers usually sample a couple cues...

Pretty cool that Intrada has now released the original Species score complete, to join their complete release of the Shearmur sequel score from a few years ago (still available from their site with a couple hundred copies left). I know Chris Young usually opposes complete & chronological releases of his music, so it's nice that he acquiesced for this one... I guess since Intrada was impressively able to fit his original album program on Disc 2 as well. It all barely fits on 2CDs!

I tend to find that Young's presentations are ideal to the complete scores but it's cool it's being released anyway so that people can make up their own minds.

Expanded reissue of Christopher Young's sci-fi/horror score to the 1995 MGM film Species!

Intrada announces an expanded reissue of Christopher Young's sci-fi/horror score to the 1995 MGM film Species. The album features the program Young put together in 2008, where he chose to present the score not in strict chronological sequence but rather in an intricately edited re-imagining of the cues to create the strongest musical listening experience. Several cues were dropped, and many others were trimmed to facilitate the new sequence. As is customary for this most creative and talented composer, Young judiciously married several otherwise-unrelated cues into longer pieces that were musically satisfying while still retaining the overall shape and architecture of the film itself. In some cases, he pulled bars from one take and inserted them into other takes as well as remixing everything to obtain the specific sound he desired. This release features that magnificent program.

Additionally, for the collector who wants everything, we've also included the complete unedited score in chronological sequence, making this the last word on Young's brilliant work. The music for Species is written for large orchestra plus synthesizers and choir. Christopher Young scored some 90 minutes of music using these forces both in full and in part, and his compositional gifts are on full display.

In the film, a seemingly human child is held in a government facility, yet the girl is actually the product of an alien transmission that enabled Earth scientists to combine extraterrestrial and human DNA. The head of the project, Xavier Fitch (Ben Kingsley) orders the destruction of the young creature, Sil. But Sil escapes before the execution can take place, quickly grows to adulthood and begins a rampage in Los Angeles. Fitch gathers a team of unlikely experts to track down and kill the creature. The personnel include an “empath” who can read others’ thoughts and feelings (Forest Whitaker), a sociologist (Alfred Molina), a biologist (Marg Helgenberger), and a government contract killer (Michael Madsen). The twist in Species is that Sil is by all appearances a beautiful human female, played as a young girl by Michelle Williams and as an adult by actress and model Natasha Henstridge.

Agreed. Young's presentations of his film scores tend to be excellent, I am very happy with them and don't "need" a C&C release of Species, I love the 2008 Young assembly as is, but it's great for anyone to have that option. SPECIES is one of my favorite Young scores.

I'm not familiar with this score, not a huge horror fan. So I gave it a listen on YT.
The main driving theme reminds me of a theme from Apollo 13 yet they both came out the same year.

I always thought the "Main Theme" from SPECIES makes a reference to "Aquarium" from Camille Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals".

I love this score - and film - and am delighted that it's now presented chronologically as well as in Young's preferred album format. An easy triple dip (I also had the promo)

I got shouted down here once for suggesting the main theme might have been temped with BASIC INSTINCT, but I stand by it. Not to say Young didn't do some magic with his end of it, as his theme is perfect for the film.

I also hear faint echoes of Aquarium in Species. Ive heard many a Basic Instinct riff in 90s scores, none more obvious than The Usual Suspects, including JFK and many others. The biggest crib in that one is Ottman quoting Christopher Young quoting "Aquarium" from Camille Saint-Saens'. eek Layers within layers.

Again no samples? This is a new thing with Intrada's releases. Any idea why they no longer post samples on their new releases?

I don't "know", but perhaps because these releases are simultaneously released for streaming and can be listened to everywhere anyway on such major streaming services such as Qobuz/Apple/Tidal etc?

Edit: Mixed that up, Species is not released on streaming so far.
