Who Will Steven Spielberg pick to score his next film after The Fabelmans???

As he was mentioned in another thread, why not blow the cobwebs off Cliff ( who he / already retired) Eidelman.

Never Ever, Ever Never

The Cue is called

Dream Crusher

I'd venture to say my generation's interest in film scores bloomed because of his work.

That's true for me. His mid-late 1970s scores are what sparked my interest. My first five LP purchases were Jaws, Jaws 2, Star Wars, Close Encounters and Superman. Bless the man.

Before I bought albums, I borrowed them from my local library. The two I remember taking out most often

Superman
Star Wars

The first movie theme I heard and loved that I remember was The Towering Inferno.

Next to Star Trek, Lost in Space was the music I loved most from TV.

All of those planted the seeds.

A loss for Hollywood to be sure, but for music fans he's still actively composing and conducting (and recording!) so the loss is mitigated that way.

If you've never had the opportunity to explore the concert side of Williams there are his own excellent recordings as well as a series of concerto recordings with Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony that are all top-of-the-line performances with superb sound. Most are available as inexpensive digital downloads.

My First John Williams LP was The Towering Inferno, Jaws, The Missouri Break, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws 2, Superman, Dracula, 1941.

And on and on.

But I also had…David Shire’s The Hindenburg (Great Score, Bad Film, Jerry was way to busy)

Henry Mancini’s The Pink Panther Strikes Back

Jerry Goldsmith’s Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes,

After more than six decades of making bicycles soar, sending panicked swimmers to the shore and other spellbinding close encounters, John Williams is putting the final notes on what may be his last film score.

“At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film,” Williams says. “So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”

The Williams quote continued:
"I plan to spend the rest of my days commenting on music blogs such as Film Score Monthly where soundtrack fans respectfully discuss music. I especially enjoy the informed, pithy observations provided by member Last Child....can't stand that Thor guy."

Sorry Thor, I tried to put in a good word for you but Johnny was vehement.

John Williams is still going strong at ninety. The music industry has never been so graced by his enduring presence. Meanwhile, people in other creative fields want to retire when they turn sixty because they will be 'too old' by then.

I think this will allow him to focus on writing personal projects, more concert tours [I think he got a kick out of his Vienna/Berlin trips] and maybe revisit some of his old compositions for a fresher relook. An album focusing on his early jazz days and maybe revisiting some of his 60's output in a new presentation would be great!

All of these will be a far cry from the hectic and dedicated timelines of film scoring (sans coitus interruptus) and allow him flexibility. He is retiring from Hollywood but not neccesarily from music.

He is retiring from Hollywood but not neccesarily from music.

He says explicitly that he's not retiring from music. He also says he's not refusing categorically never to return to film. It's just a choice he's making now that makes sense to him.

More importantly in an interview sometime a year ago I think he said "I hope I never retire" I'm sure he will find a way to come out of the film retirement should a project is too exciting to pass.

I'd add JURASSIC PARK to that list.
Maybe CE3K too (certainly THOSE 5 notes).

That's true for me, by way of Lost in Space and The Poseidon Adventure. But to be fair, if not for them, there would still have been Star Trek and The Six Million Dollar Man, and a good few "formative" movie experiences to rope me in.

Film music was gonna get me one way or another. John Williams just got there first and did it indelibly.

Williams received screen credit as a "Music Consultant" on WEST SIDE STORY. I suspect Spielberg will continue to involve Williams in projects because he trusts his instincts and wisdom.

I reckon Williams deserves to retire after creating one of the most satisfying bodies of work of any Hollywood composer.

I only wish he had spent the previous ten-fifteen years applying his talent to more substantial, worthier films.

Death didn't slow down Jerry's releases, so I'm sure John's retirement will do as much for his releases.
