The swelling statement of the Force theme as Luke gazes at the spectacular double sunset in Star Wars is a particular fave.

I always found this one interesting, because that is not the way Williams wanted to score that scene. He scored it completely differently and Lucas told him to go back and redo it with the force theme. Williams objected because Obi-Wan and the Force hadn't even been introduced into the movie yet but Lucas insisted. Amazing that it would turn out to be one of the best cues in the movie!

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK:

Marian I'm with you on this. Great scene. WAY more powerful - (also) due to Williams' theme - than Vader's first appearance in the Rebel Ship in SW.

The Carbon Freeze: The sound FX, the aweful shot of Vader's Mask, the urgent statement of his theme: PURE MAGIC

It's all tied to Vader... http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/smile.gif">

I have always been under the impression that the trailer music for A.I. was an excerpt from Zbigniew Preisner's FAIRY TALE-score. That is, unless Williams has composed some original material since, like he did with HARRY POTTER.

several for me, I suppose.

-- I love the version of the force theme that is played in TPM as Anakin leave shis home.

-- just about anything from Close Encounters...brilliant creation all around.

-- Hook, when Tink flies Peter to Neverland.

-- Raiders, "Desert Chase"

Thor, your quite right about Preisner's FAIRY TAIL score being used in the trailer to A.I, however, the latest trailer features once again Preisner's music at the start and then a new composition by John Williams.
This score is gonna be a real treat by the sounds of it!

Tough to argue with Map Room...but let me add "Cadillac of the Skies" to the pot. And the last half hour of Close Encounters (incl. Special Edition).

Well, young Mr. L, your now-wizened counterpart insists on adding “Fortress of Solitude” and “Hymn to the Fallen” to the pot. Nothing like a perennial work in progress, hmm?

The way I see it... Ben Gardner's Boat steals the scene it was written for. It evokes intense atmosphere, and it promises adventure and wonder to come. And the work that followed between Williams and Spielberg, and Lucas, delivered on that promise, again and again, over decades. Such a trove to choose from, BUT the scene was set with that extended moment in Jaws.

I have a few that personally get to me still today--

1- The first time we hear the Death Star theme (when star destroyer approaches Death star in episode IV
2- accelerated melody over Newman/McQueen Credit in beginning of Towering Inferno
3- Strong finish when Millenium Falcon takes off from cloud city
4- fanfare from 84' olympics
5- Finish from superman theme
6- those horns after "I'll.... be... right... here"
7- strings passage from 'Ancestral home' from The River

I could name several dozen more but I'll stop there smile

But it's sad. Luke has finally given into his anger and now Father and Son fight to the death. .

Like that ending it kind of triumphs and then quickly goes over to the Sith theme while Palpatine says "good.... good"

The last 6 or 7 minutes of E. T. ("The Departure") still knocks me down, especially paired with the visuals. Henry Thomas should have won some kind of award for his performance, too.

Very hard to choose, so many.... I think his most memorable moment of late was his decision to rescind his retirement from film scoring.

Too many to note but those that stand out:

Star Wars: A New Hope - Ben's Death/Tie Fighter Attack ("Here They Come")
Star Wars: Imperial March/Darth Vader's Theme
Raiders of the Lost Ark: Desert Chase
E.T. : Adventure on Earth (particular the final closing minutes - downright operatic)

For me, it would be the first moment I got to experience Williams in the theater--Journey to the Island from JURASSIC PARK.

Basically everything from "There it is!" to "And I'm not just talking about rides...everybody has RIDES" is cinematic perfection according to 6 year old me.

Without naming whole scores or whole tracks I'll list my favorite "moments" within films which I believe is the point of the thread.

  • ET The Extra-Terrestrial - Early in the film when Elliott brings ET into his room and they both get very drowsy. I love Williams' "sleepy" music as Elliott passes out in the chair.

  • Return of the Jedi - As the Emperor responds to Luke "Your faith in your friends is yours!" the Emperor's theme swells as he informs Luke of the trap his friends are walking into.

  • Temple of Doom - The rope bridge percussion prior to Indy cutting the support ropes. It makes you feel like you're walking on that rickety bridge.

  • The Empire Strikes Back - Perhaps Williams' most famous unused cue...the original Empire Fleet music when we first see the Imperial Star Destroyers and then Vader. Bombast heaven!

  • Far & Away - I know I said I wouldn't name a whole track but I can't help it..."The Land Race" is among the most uplifting music I've ever heard. I never tire of it.
