Very sad news. Tom issued on LP and then CD many great scores I treasure. In 1980 and 1983 I visited Varese and meet Tom, he was very nice and I enjoyed meeting him. I think he was in his late 70's when he passed.

i recently found some CDs on eBay and got to talk with the seller and they did confirm he passed last year. he was instrumental with Varese and his own citadel label.

https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/tom-null-dead
"Tom Null dead
Have not been able to confirm online but a Santa Cruz based record dealer was approached via email to gauge interest in buying Tom's 17000 CDs. Apparently his LP Collection sold for 43000$. Supposedly cancer got him. Hopefully members know his work on the Varese Sarabande label."

This is the seller who's selling Mr. Null's collection on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/str/gurnblanston67?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

I bought the Varese CD release of Seven Samurai/Rashomon from him a few months ago, but didn't realize at the time that Mr. Null had actually passed away. RIP, good sir.

RIP Tom Null - I respected and completely never understood his wacky album sequencing...but always smiled when I saw the name, since I knew I was in for a "Null Playlist".

Yes, no words from Robert Townson on Facebook either.

And you will never hear him speak a word on that. Bob isn't always the best at giving credit where it's due (just a reminder, he never owned Varese and was an executive like me, Bruce, Cary, Steve, Kevin, etc).

Tom co-founded the label. Great music guy. RIP. Cantankerous, yes but a good guy.

I had heard he passed away some time ago but was unsure it was rumor or not.

From the stories that Tom told me a few years ago that I recorded from our conversations I am not surprised Bob did not mention anything about Tom on Bobs socials. But Bob may not have known. Current owners of Varése yes I agree they would not have posted nor knew who he was. Previous owners like Cutting Edge and Küchler did care and probably would have posted about it.

I agree. He may not know or is aware BUT I seriously doubt he ever mentions it. Bob will always be about Bob.

Bruce, thank you very much for your V-S history, which I just now read and found fascinating. I must say, though, perhaps the most fascinating part for me was reading the backstory of Delerue's Oscar win for A LITTLE ROMANCE. I'll always regret not sending Mr. Goldsmith, whom I'd recently interviewed for my STAR TREK-THE MOTION PICTURE project, the note I contemplated, to wit: "You was robbed."

I was informed through a friend that Bob did post about Tom Null's passing on his Facebook page and Bob did hint at the "issues" him and Tom had while they worked together. In my lengthy discussions with Tom a few years ago, Tom mentioned in detail the issues him and Bob had and elaborated on much. Was just re-listening to my recording of this last night. They had quite a few verbal fights, but there was at least one encounter when Tom had had enough and pushed Bob against the wall. This was told to me by several former employees. I have found often times, least out here in Hollywoodland that those that dislike each other the most, often times it's because they are so much alike. Tom was a character on so many levels.

Tom also had in his position a LOT of master tapes in his collection. Many albums they only know tapes that still existed were at his home or storage units. I only hope whoever was in charge of his estate did NOT throw those away. Because that could mean the only known tapes of several soundtracks.

Of course he did. Somebody apprised him of this thread because his post was made exactly four hours and contains much information from my posts.

Yes, would love to know who disposed of the tapes and how. I know he had some stuff I would have liked to have since it belonged to me. Tom was volatile - the stuff with Bob-O was mild compared to Chris - he once through a chair at Chris, which I believe was the beginning of the end.

I can't even imagine what expression Chris had on his face after having a chair heaved at him. Wow. I've heard a few stories about Tom and Bob's animosity towards each other but that one Peter mentions above about Tom shoving Bob against a wall is the one I've heard most.

Oh and since we all know he's most likely reading this thread, I give him props for acknowledging Tom's passing. Did not expect it...

Nah, there's no mud-slinging here, merely truth. There has BEEN plenty of that but not coming from anyone here. Look elsewhere smile

I've heard about these Varese quarrels over the years. Basically like the FSM Messageboard on an average day. There are few other arenas where things get so heated as within small niches.

first of all, RIP to Tom Null, a seminal figure in the business.
Secondly, I find very strange that Varese did not break news and/or properly eulogized him..is it ever possible they did not know?

Read the history. There WAS a Varese prior to Bob and prior to Richard K. I was there. From the start.

Where can we find the story...???

What I took from scanning that (it goes on a bit) was, Jerry Goldsmith probably would have won his 2nd Oscar for Star Trek The Motion Picture, if it wasn't for Bruce Kimmell and all those grasping, free loading Academy members.

"Yes, would love to know who disposed of the tapes and how. I know he had some stuff I would have liked to have since it belonged to me."

So, truth is he was a thief?

Or he innocently borrowed tapes and forgot to give them back to you?
