How come the score to THE GUNFIGHTER only ran three minutes long? Nobody knows, Kev. Sorry.

Haha, thanks for trying anyway, Graham.

The special quality of THE GUNFIGHTER was the story. It was an adult western without Technicolor and beautiful vistas to look at which would have made it more accessible for more music. The Bluray was released in Germany a few weeks ago. The picture and sound qualities are very good indeed . Film is in English with HOH English sub - titles .

How come the score to THE GUNFIGHTER only ran three minutes long? Nobody knows, Kev. Sorry. I know ! I posted the reason one or two postings back if you care to read it. I did read it, cody. And haines's. Did you read mine? "Humour is a funny thing." (Karl Marx in Duck Soup). This looks like a great set indeed. I wonder if I'll ever get around to ordering it. Soooo many things out there, even releases from 20-plus years ago, which I'm slowly getting around to purchasing. It's a big dilemma (well, not in the Third World) this "having" so much. No time to listen, really listen - six, ten, fifty times - to the old collection. I hope this sells well even if I'm dead before I buy it.

hmm... I guess this is especially for those few that don't already have THE BLACK SWAN, five other versions of CAPTAIN FROM CASTILLE and two versions of LOVE IS MANY SPLENDORED THING... Not sure I am that eager to spend 60 + massive shipping costs to get the CD 4 that only holds some new material Well, we knew there'd be one - just didn't expect it to be first. Every one of these scores sounds better, I only know of one other complete release of Captain from Castile, and Prince of Foxes is majorly expanded. Yes. Shame on me for expecting something other than just a box full of reissues with only single interesting disc after more than a year since the last interesting Kritzerland release. Maybe I'll just wait until someone reissues it on its own. You may very well have yourself a long wait, depending on whenever Disney decides to lift that "pause," as Mike Mattesino put it, on Fox soundtracks, if ever. Now I hate to be that person, but in light of Prince of Foxes getting a major facelift, any chance Prince Valiant slipped through the cracks of said "pause" for a similar rehaul.

"I did read it, cody. And haines's. Did you read mine? "Humour is a funny thing." (Karl Marx in Duck Soup)" -------------------------- Dinna Fash, Graham. You need to learn the way of the Emoji. Haven't you seen the film? (The Emoji Movie...I mean). How are we supposed to know you are joking if yer dinna use the winkies!!?? (although I did, but that's because we're twinned, like Hoffenheim and Arbroath).

Oh LORT! What a great box! Question about Prince of Foxes: does Attempted Assassination exist only as a point/counterpoint cue? What I mean is. there are two melodies on top of each other, the regal theme and the more savage underscore that starts the cue. I ask because the underscore was used prominently on the Irwin Allen shows like The Time Tunnel and Voyage...but without the regal portion. While I know Lionel Newman rerecorded many cues for library use, this never sounded like a re-do. Am I making any sense at all?

Having seen the film, I distinctly recall hearing a menacing brass chord over the opening timpani strokes heard on the FSM. It will be interesting to hear if that has been restored.

Thanks for the generous samples. That's always helpful.

I can understand those are are frustrated or disappointed at having to buy a $60 box set for really a single disc that is of interest to them, because they are happy with the sound quality of the previous releases for the other scores. I too was hoping and rather expecting more of this 5 CD director-themed set to be "new" music, and it ended up being less than half a disc (or a tenth of the set). I would have to assume that this was the case because other potential premiere scores for Henry King, including Alfred Newman's Margie (which is lovely), just did not survive in releasable condition (or in some cases, are obviously owned by Varese). That said, 1. Alfred Newman is my favorite Golden Age composer (frankly I'm surprised that the director is so emphasized, and he's not even credited at all on the front cover considering all five scores are his work) 2. Captain from Castile is my favorite Golden Age score, and I would re-buy it for even a modest sound upgrade. (I would still flip out for a complete new recording of the score, just to get the one missing/deteriorated "Prelude" cue!) 3. I also like The Black Swan and would be happy for a sound upgrade there...and I'll confess I never got around to picking up the Kritzerland Love Is A Many-Splendored thing, so I'm not in the same boat as some of you with that redundancy (and I heard it was improved over the Varese Club version). 4. The Gunfighter, while only 3 minutes of music, is a really *good* 3 minutes. Quality over quantity, and I am so grateful Bruce included this premiere even as brief as it is. (See also: Kritzerland's superb release of Elmer Bernstein's six minute score -- well, twice, kinda -- to Hud.) 5. Most importantly of all, for me: I have longed for a better sounding and more complete release of Prince of Foxes, for well over a decade now. I remember seeing the film and noticing more good music that was left off the FSM (which was still a godsend, at the time, despite the sound being rather disappointing). This sounds like it's going to be a leap in quality over that release on the level of of Bruce's release of David and Bathsheba, as compared with Intrada's. 6. This looks like Kritzerland's most ambitious and impressive release, from a production standpoint, to date. A *24 page booklet* with liner notes from multiple people including Mike Mattesino, Jon Burlingame, and even David Newman?? A tribute to Nick Redman from his wife Julie Kirgo? That's above and beyond and attention must be paid. Yes, I am most definitely buying this. Thank you, Bruce. Yavar
