"Civilization is, you know, wafer thin, to quote Churchill. It's one generation, and it's gone. So when people pass away, they take with them all of their knowledge and all of their experiences."
And of course since it's already Friday in New Zealand and many other countries, the album's all over the internet if you want to listen before it's Friday in your country
The two main classical music magazines in the UK at the moment (Classical Music & Gramophone) both have big film music features this month. One has a cover story featuring the Mutter/Williams collaboration and the other is a Film Music special. How times change (crawls out from under his 80's/90's rock from hiding)
Interesting: I love Williams' music and I love the sound of the violin as well, still, this album fails to grab me somehow. I can't help it but I don't really like it. Haven't figured it out yet why.
Perhaps because there's too much virtuosity on display? Lots of embellisments and so on, so that Mutter can show off her skills? I can appreciate that for what it is, but ultimately I prefer the more "clean-shaven" performances.

I quite enjoy that actually. New arrangements make the music sound fresh, instead of just a faithful recording of the originals. For a project like this it makes it worthwhile, otherwise what would really be the point? The Morricone/Yo-Yo Ma collection is another good example.
I haven't bought this release however, I'm waiting for the deluxe.

i´m with you, in a way it sounds soulless...it doesn´t make "click"!

The Morricone Yo-Yo Ma album is a gem, I absolutely love it. That's why even myself find it strange that this Williams-Mutter collaboration falls flat on me.
Yes, the Yo Yo Ma/Williams album is fantastic, an essential for any Williams fan (I'm guessing you guys meant that rather than the Morrione one, since this was about Williams). But the difference there is that it's written out from the get-go to be performed with virtuosity, and clear, focussed lines. The Mutter album is different -- it's as if the melody lines are often suffocated by the ornamentation around them. I'm all for multiple interpretations of famous themes, and don't necessarily need them to stick closely to the original, but it needs to be clear and concise in its communication. I feel that the Mutter album is very hit and miss in that regard.
