I've never seen either film, nor heard a note of either score to 'Rio Conchos' and '100 Rifles'. What scores are they most like? I don't know why I've avoided these films and scores when they were previously released, but I'm guessing it was over $$ going towards another title.
The Kritzerland sound samples are still up on their page (LLL is utilizing their Michael Mattesino-produced master) -- it's a GREAT score; check it out! http://www.kritzerland.com/rio_conchos.htm

Montana, you are in for a double treat. 100 Rifles is like Goldsmith's Planet Of The Apes and Wind And The Lion funneled into a somewhat experimental western (ESCAPE AND PURSUIT, JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!). Rio Conchos isn't a Cinemascope-style sound, either, but it's more traditional and features one of my absolute favorite themes.
To Shaun and Yavar: I did try the samples for 'Rio Conchos' at the Kritzerland site. The first few samples that played sounded (to me anyway), like Goldsmith's 'The Balad of Cable Hogue', a favorite of mine. When I went to the link for '100 Rifles' at the FSM site, my computer won't recognize the player, so I'll just wait, I guess, for the samples to this score to appear at LaLaLand's site. Thanks for the tips though!
Netflix has '100 Rifles' available, and most of the members who viewed it have given it high marks, so I put the film in my queue. 'Rio Conchos' must be out of print or something, Netflix doesn't even have it listed.
Instead of clicking on the track titles at the FSM page (which lead to full track RealPlayer samples), click on the track *times* instead, which lead to MP3 samples of the first minute of every track.
Also the whole movie for Rio Conchos is currently up on YouTube in HD:

There are two types of samples used by FSM: RealAudio and MP3. If you click on the link for the track length you will get the MP3 sample, which you should be able to play.
I have the FSM edition of 100 Rifles and I don't listen to it any more. I'll be happy to mail it to you free of charge if you'd like to have it. Let me know. My email is in my profile.
It might be Jerry's most badass and intense western score. I adore that dark Hispanic brass flavor!
For anyone who loves Goldsmith's action music, 100 Rifles is worth it for the track Escape and Pursuit alone. Especially when the crazy pursuit ostinato gets going. I'm actually kinda fond of the film, which I only purchased because of the score - and Fernando Lamas always scares me now.
And River Crossing from Rio Conchos is one of my favorite Goldsmith tracks ever, and I know just about all of them. Love the movie too, another that I got to know only because of the music - in the Intrada re-recording, also a must purchase. But the Kritzerland remaster is an astonishing improvement over the worthy FSM edition, and for those who don't have it, it's gonna be so worth it to pick up this release!

One of the many brilliant things about Goldsmith is that despite scoring so many westerns he didn't really have a "western sound." I recently listened to both of these scores and Rio Lobo as part of my whittling campaign and was struck by how different they are.

Not necessarily...don't forget their version is restored/remixed/remastered and will no doubt sound much better than the FSM thanks to the technological advances that allowed Rio Conchos to be so improved.
Although the FSM might retain the best/most detailed liner notes...we'll have to see.
