Wow! The Casino Dance reminded all over again of why I fell in love Tiomkin's music. Nobody, but nobody could go over the top like he could. I'm going to get a lawn chair and a couple of beers to go out and wait by my mailbox.

(And if you want to hear the sheer range of what he could do, listen to the Main Title of The Big Sky.)

Ah, THE BIG SKY, another unique and wonderful score by Dimitri Tiomkin. Now back to the subject at hand.smile

I'm neither familiar with film nor score and was therefore on the fence about this one. Those videos sold me. Especially the "Casino Dance".

First video didn't sell me, but then I'm not usually a fan of Tiomkin's music. But then I listened to Casino Dance...gotta say the title didn't exactly prepare me for how exciting that was going to be! That, plus the *best cover artwork of any Prometheus release, ever* ... plus the fact that Tadlow/Prometheus should be supported so that these important recordings can continue (please don't let this be the last one you fund, Luc!) -- well, let's just say that I talked myself into buying it.

I am genuinely surprised how many people here have never seen 'Duel In The Sun'. And people who consider themselves film music fans.
I'll bet if you actually watched more of his films, you might become a fan. You might even find that you like him more than Rozsa.

FYI...Duel in the Sun will be released on Blu Ray by Kino probably in the fall if not sooner.

August 15th is the temporary release date for the Blu Ray.

Newly Recorded in Stunning and Dynamic 24-Bit 96kHz Digital Sound

James, will a high-definition audio format be available as well as the 2-CD set? Thanks!

Sorry but you bet wrong. Actually I tend to like Tiomkin's music somewhat better (though never close to as much as Rozsa) when I *don't* see the films. In virtually every instance I feel like his heavy-handed approach harms the film it was meant to support, which makes me really resent his music even if I might otherwise have thought it was okay on its own. Thank GOD Hitchcock ditched him for Waxman and Herrmann. I can't stand Shadow of a Doubt and Strangers on a Train isn't much of an improvement. The climax of High Noon is one of the few times I really like his scoring with picture. But even much of that score does little for me. I am just not a fan and probably never will be.

That said, James's marvelous recordings of Tiomkin's Fall of the Roman Empire and The Alamo show him in his absolute best light...even if I would happily take virtually any Rozsa/Goldsmith/Bernstein/Newman/Friedhofer/Waxman/Korngold/Herrmann/Webb score instead. Hell, even a few Steiners and Victor Youngs! smile But no need to further re-litigate my opinion of Tiomkin here. If you want to discuss it further let's start a new thread.

It's not even the first time...though if Luc and James are closing up shop I guess it may very well be the last. But I'll have no regrets about owning the entire line of modern Tadlow recordings, even if there is some Tiomkin in there. smile

WE ARE DEFINITELY ON A ROLL !

I'm honestly very happy for you two!

I love how they get that Tiomkin sound out of this orchestra. Grabbing this one for sure!

Yep. Sounds great. I'll be getting. I vaguely recall seeing the film 25-30 years ago. Think it seemed quite steamy for a film of the time, and I do still vividly remember the climax.

James Fitzpatrick said he likes to have people who have ordered his productions receive their CD very close to the release date. I hope the good folks at SAE will keep that in mind. Can't wait for a shipping notice with tracking information.smile

"Looks really great and the clips sound fantastic, and I see you included the roadshow music. I can hardly wait to get this. Quick question, is the concert suite included here the same that was recorded in Prague years ago or is it an entirely new suite?"

"Same suite ....new recording"

***

My question: Is it the same suite that Arthur Fiedler recorded with the Boston Pops way back in the day?

Am I to guess it's the suite labeled as simply "Entr'acte" for some reason on the 4CD Tiomkin set??

Clips from "Duel in the Sun" sounds fantastic. Ordered together with American Epic.

It is great to have this awesome Tiomkin scores recorded by James with Nic and Prague Orchestra.

We have

"Alamo"
"The Fall of the Roman Empire"
and now
"Duel in the Sun"

There is one more Tiomkin score which im sure will be outstanding in new recording....

I think about "Land of Pharaohs". Of course, we have FSM 2cd release, but with old 50' mono sound...

This score will be glorious in new digital recording and performance. This furious marches, INCREDIBLE vocals, choruses, all instrumental colours...

It will be great...

James, Have you ever considered new "Land of Pharaohs" ?

Best, Michal

I hope SAE will start shipping DUEL IN THE SUN today, Friday June 9 so that it will arrive by June 14. SAE, of course, is not Tadlow but James earlier posted that that is how Tadlow operates. Just a wish. I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers.smile

It's because SAE is slow with imports, that I ordered directly from Tadlow. If I'd ordered from SAE, I wouldn't expect it until another two weeks from now.

Thanks for the update Cody.

I've waited over 50 years for DUEL IN THE SUN, another few days won't matter! smile
