Amen to that! This score encouraged me to seek out other music by S U R V I V E, so I'd call it 110% successful

Nope.

This is Stand By Me by way of Firestarter. The score is perfect. Pitch perfect. This is not ET or Monster Squad.

MV

If only the music had the personality of Stand By Me and Firestarter... but it doesn't.

BTW, the relationship between Mike and Eleven is right out of E.T. but there is ZERO warmth, musically, to their initial relationship.

The series is a love letter to the 'hero kid' movie with R rated horror. The score doesn't have anything to say about either of the genres.

Really like the show, but feel like someone should have put a gentle hand on Winona Ryder's military jacket-clad shoulder and said "what you did there, that's too much."

What are you talking about? Ryder was fantastic!

Love the show! I have two episodes to go and it might very well be the best acted 'hero kids' film/show I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, the score is quite possibly the most disappointing score I've heard in a long, long time. Sure, the synthy 80's vibe fits with the time but this is a show that desperately needed a classic, 80's thematic fully orchestral score with some synth colours.

If you look back at the 80's 'hero kids' movie, the scores are all (except for maybe Flight of the Navigator and The Russkies) thematic, big orchestral scores. E.T., Explorers, The Goonies, The Monster Squad... hell, even Mac and Me got a big score from Alan Silvestri.

And it's not so much the synths that bother me, it's the actual composition. It's not good at all. It's totally forgettable, droning, non-thematic, loop based music which is, for the lack of the better word, boring. I can't believe it took TWO guys to create this.

IMO, the producers dropped the ball on this one.

What's interesting in the show is the fact they use very good synth music with an Amblin-like story. To use orchestral music à la Super 8 would have been SO predictable. And I prefer good synth scoring to bad orchestral scoring like so many wanna-be Williams/Goldsmith/Horner write nowadays.
And by the way, the show is good from épisode 1 to 4. After that, it's boring.

I like good synth scoring, too. But this is NOT good synth scoring. It's boring loops, predictable chords, with no melody or hooks.

An organic symphonic score would have give much needed dramatic weight to pivotal scenes. Also, a theme or motif for our hero kids and a motif for the bad guys would have been welcomed. Christopher Young like horror scoring for the creature and other dimension would have been spectacular. Imagine what a good composer could have done for Eleven.

The music in the show is so bland. It's a missed opportunity for something TRULY great... synth or orchestral. It's too bad that a show of this quality doesn't have the musical identity it deserved.

It makes me wish that the show WAS produced in the 80's.

And I prefer good synth scoring to bad orchestral scoring like so many wanna-be Williams/Goldsmith/Horner write nowadays.

Example?

And by the way, the show is good from épisode 1 to 4. After that, it's boring.

Boring? Not for me. I binge watched this sucker and enjoyed every minute.

Have to stick by my assessment. The frantic, hunched over thing got old pretty quick. Maybe a fault of the story, which introduces her character AFTER a certain event occurs — we never know her as anything other than Winona Ryder with messy hair, chain-smoking while stringing up Christmas lights. David Harbour, who plays the Police Chief, is really the revelation here — that's an even-handed performance. I think Ryder overdid it, considering this is her first major role in anything in what seems like years, maybe she felt like she had to go OTT.

This sounds like a show and score right up my alley. I'll be binge-watching on Netflix soon, and I hope to acquire the soundtrack pretty soon too.

She's a determined mother who just lost a child. All of her energy is given to finding Will and when others around her give up she's mighty pissed especailly when her dick head of an ex-husband comes by and pulls what he did. Her performance during the scene should earn her an Emmy Award. As a father that's exactly how I would have reacted. My wife felt the same way, too. Ryder, IMO, nailed her performance

He's stupendous.

Everything about her performance was, IMO, spot on!

Started watching this today. Great show and loving the music with that tangerine dream vibe. ?

Actually, I thought they had licensed their music!

Two eps in I am not sure about this one.
For one thing, it's boring. The side stories with the high school lovers seems to have no purpose (so far)
Besides the movies previously mentioned as inspiration, add James Cameron's tv show DARK ANGEL.

wILL GIVE IT A COUPLE OF MORE EPS TO SEE IF IT PICKS UP STEAM

I was disappointed that they felt the need to portray a murder at point blank range.

Bad move

I agree this show's score doesn't work, except for the opening title.

And honestly, I felt the show was very overrated for what it is. The kids are no Goonies. The girl who played 11 was good. I couldn't stand the teens (Nancy, her bf, his friends). The monster stuff was lackluster - except for the first episode when you could barely see it. Once it was out in the open I lost interest. Modine was terrible. I agree Wyder's performance was over the top. The only actor I really liked was the Sherriff.

Really conflicted on this one. Basically I agree with absolutely everything everyone had said so far. Everyone is correct.

Also, just me or is Modine channeling David Cronnenberg here?

Was excited that this was on Netflix in Canada. I'm 15 minutes in and....just edited my post and realized, I have no business posting before I finish the first ep....

I just finished viewing all 8 episodes. While I would have loved a score with the 1980's sensibilities of Goldsmith, Williams, Broughton, Horner, etc. (just imagine the main theme, the love theme, the friendship theme, the motif for the monster, the bad guy theme, set-pieces with their very own thematic material, etc.), an electronic score in the style of Carpenter is certainly an interesting and valid approach.

The main title hints of the flavor that could have elevated the score into one that exceeds the minimal requirement of supporting the film. However, after this one viewing, the score seemed to lack the boldness and clarity that film score enthusiasts most appreciate. I suppose the score did a satisfactory job in conveying certain moods that the directors may have been going for, but it didn't seem to do any more than that. Perhaps the composers were limited by the expectations of the directors and producers, and the final product didn't leave me craving a soundtrack release. Maybe a second viewing would make me aware of more interesting musical ideas in the score.

The series itself was entertaining overall, even if it didn't reach excellence in my opinion. On the plus side: the period flavor and the acting. The young actors were stronger than typical, and the adults were fine as well. I can see how some viewers might react negatively to Ryder's performance. I appreciated that Ryder attempted something with the role, and at least it wasn't bland. She made me feel like I hadn't seen a character like that before, so I found her interesting. On the other hand, I felt that the story would have been best served by a running length that was half as long. At times, the series felt padded and some scenes seemed repetitive. The length of the series, in my opinion, hurt the effectiveness of the performances. I can see how 8 episodes of Ryder's performance or the constant bickering and profanity of the young cast would irritate viewers. Ultimately, I did not like the central character, Eleven. The young actress is probably fine, but I felt her character was inconsistently handled and remained an enigma, varying between whimpering and forceful.

Kudos to the entire production team for coming up with a series that is at least interesting enough to have people talk about it!

If Varese releases this, THIS is a title that will do well on limited-run vinyl (not Orange Is The New Black, which is warping and rotting away on every record store's shelves as we speak).

I've only seen the first episode and I liked it. Hope to catch the rest of it within the next week or so.

The opening title sequence had a "V" vibe going for it.
