Happy New Year Everybody!

I couldn't help but notice Leigh Phillips had posted audio/video of Goldsmith's Legend, including "The Unicorns" and the "Dress Waltz." Dare I say, could this be a new re-recording on the way? That would be wonderful.

-Rick O.

Is a new recording for this really needed? James Fitzpatrick has been adamant that all of the music that was recorded was included on the Silva release, and it sounds great to me.

It certainly sounds great, but there's at least one alternate on the original album, there are additional cues on the foot warmer, and Lily's vocals are different in the movie. It's far from everything that was recorded. Watch the animatic for the faerie dance on the DVD. What you hear isn't on the album!

Yes...no need I guess...Instead have a take on unreleased stuff or mono recordings.
Just like THE VIKINGS etc.

If he said that, he's 100% wrong. But I'm pretty sure James only said that all of the *surviving* music was included on the Silva release, so unless a new source is uncovered we will probably have to content ourselves with the footwarmer in very poor sound quality, just as with Link.

The film Version of The Unicorns has a 30 second bridge for French Horns (absent from all albums) that make an already fabulous cue simply incredible. Sure, one can say "Why bitch over missing a mere 30 seconds?", but the content within it evokes more power (IMHO) than the whole 8 minute piece.

Perhaps it was recorded as an insert?

Either way, the inclusion of that (if possible) would have me rebuying the score.

I'd buy a Tadlow re-recording if they included it!

Leigh Phillips is preparing "Legend Suite" for Prague concert dedicated to Ridley Scott films.

There will never be a new recording. OST sounds great and Silva album is perfect.

Not entirely true. The expanded Unicorns track was available on the original Film Trax CD and the Japanese CD. I have no idea why it was dropped from the expanded editions. There’s one more unreleased cue that I can think of. And those masters do exist.

Whoa, Roger. Thanks for the info. Now I guess I have to seek out that earlier edition. Is that the only bit of music dropped from the original album on subsequent expansion, or are there other alternate versions you know of?

When you say "those masters do exist" are you referring to the Unicorns insert and this one other cue, or are you referring to the full Legend masters more generally? Obviously there is a good deal of unreleased music, as heard on the footwarmer and discussed in film context on this site:

I do apologize! I didn't mean to resurrect an old thread with old, and mostly resolved, debate. It's been ages since I logged in to FB, and I now see that this is part of an upcoming suite. Still cool! It's all great. And yes Legend has an amazing album, and I love it. smile

Thanks for the info. Please excuse my confusion, I have both the Up Art (Filmtrax) 1986 CD and the 1993 expanded Silva UK CD and both discs have "The Unicorns" at 7:53 - does this differ from later versions?

The version on the first release of the soundtrack opens with a different take than the one used in the film and on the Silva cd. The cue is the same after that.

Yes, but does it include the awesome 30 second French horn bridge that was brought up?

The Up-Art cd I have does not have a 30-second French Horn bridge. The sole difference I can detect is the alternate take used to open the track and that's no more than 11 seconds. Maybe if someone could provide an approximate time in the cue...

I'll go on record here as enthusiastically welcoming any newly remastered or expanded release of LEGEND though there's nothing really wrong with the existing Silva cd.

A few quotes from James Fitzpatrick's liner notes in the Silva release:

"...when it was discovered that the original album master had been lost...we contacted the recording engineer for the LEGEND sessions, Mike Ross-Trevor...he had stored a set of 2-track digital tapes from the original sessions (mixed down from an 8-track)...an alternate master utilizing some of the additional music was prepared and then sequenced in the order they would have appeared in the uncut version of the film..."

So depending on what was preserved on the 2-track tapes that Ross-Trevor kept it seems possible that more music could be released. And of course Mike Matessino continues to work to identify music elements at Universal and who knows what could turn up there.

Was this confirmed? The complete masters for the score as heard in the film do exist? Or is Roger just referring to those cues?

Well I have a b*** which contains the alternate Unicorns that DOES have the french horn bridge. So I can confirm that it does exist.

In addition, there is an alternate "Dress Waltz" and two versions of an unreleased cue "Hall of Columns".

I can NOT imagine where I got this, picked it up at the ass end of cyberspace I suppose!
