I would honestly WELCOME a TRUE, authentic, and precise release of these scores. I have heard various stories about the condition in which the scores exist. From I believe an FSM article in the 90's, there was talk about the original masters missing for quite some time up until the Special Edition of the films were to be produced. You, of course, had the original Tomlinson mixes on the Anthology set (4 CD's), which then was to have a 5th disc produced but with the decision to create the Special Edition's of the films, this extra disc was scrapped. Since then, some material was missing. I know in the article it mentioned that the sessions to STAR WARS were missing and eventually found in a closet in I forget if it was Poland or Germany, and those were brought back, cleaned up, and that's why A NEW HOPE has such good quality sound to it. Empire Strikes back was another one where the sessions were found but if I recall, only about HALF of the scores original Tomlinson mixes existed anymore and so in ONE DAY the sound engineer had to remix a little more than half the score. The problem with this is his mixes are RIDDLED with errors. The synth is too loud, the choir is too loud, the strings are almost mono-phonic, and the horns are often flipped. The errors in the strings mixing ESPECIALLY evident in the "Asteroid" and "Jump To Hyperspace" cues, the choir and synth are evident as well as the "Cloud City" and "Wampa Ice Creature" cues, and the horns are evident in pretty much everything. One of the most DRAMATIC cues, the "Battle of Hoth" with the walkers coming and the DUEL pianos (one in each channel) gets down mixed into the center along with the harp. I mean, really crazy mistakes. Also, probably due to the size of the discs, there were several cues missing including the original finale, the alternate or insert ending for R2 guarding Luke's XWing, a small piece from earlier in the film just to name a few. Lastly, Jedi. From my understanding, the original masters to this are lost completely (although I had heard a rumor they'd been found AFTER the production of the SE's). The masters used to produce the JEDI set are copies and are therefore, diminished in quality and thus a great deal of hiss reduction was applied to them. Then, of course, due to the nature of the SE's and their revisions, certain tracks were left off. Also, many of the tracks seem to have been lost to time such as the various Joseph William's source cues for Jabba The Hutt's palace and if I recall there's an Ewok battle insert missing. So as far as what's been found since then, if the STARWARS.com Sound boards are any indication, the only materials found have been isolated elements premixed for the film but nothing else score related. I would welcome a truly complete and PROPER release of these scores. I bought the SE's but excepting ANH and Half of Empire, I don't listen to them due to how bad they sound or due to the errors in producing them.

I would LOVE complete scores for the PT as well, but it's not an issue about these "box sets." The Anthology, to my ears, is still the best and most accurate mixing and quality, although I supplement ANH with disc 1 from the anthology. Empire has better mixing than the SE so I tend to defer again to the anthology. JEDI is again, better quality than the SE. So to me, there really is only the Anthology, and a few tracks from the SE's. The triple re-pressings/re-releases were silly on their part, to be honest. Removing the AMAZING liner notes and putting in posters or holograms were "interesting"and fun for some, but were no reason to re-buy. Quality is the big difference to me. If they could come out with a QUALITY product, even if it's pretty much the same stuff, I'd buy it. It's obvious that it's possible. For instance, for the DVD music videos that they put out with Episode III's album, they remixed form the original masters for these and tracks like "Imperial March" are SOOOOO much better sounding, it's obvious that it's possible to make a GOOD and QUALITY product. The issue is doing it.

If anyone has a chance with Star Wars its Intrada. As for the rest, LOTR is pretty much taken care of. Bond is still up in the air (a matter I hope we can resolve in the near fture..at least on SOME titles). Potter is so close I can taste it. As for Matrix, its just a matter of artwork approval at WB (and, as you know, that can take some time) MV I feel like this comment by MV deserves a thread by itself. Potter is close?! Matrix on artwork approval! Bond titles confirmed to be on the horizon! Tis the season that just keeps giving and giving!

Between the Anthology boxed set and the 30th anniversary boxed set what is missing? I think these cover the original three films pretty well. Having another super boxed set would only be worth it if it also covered the missing music from the prequel trilogy. Well for starters, having almost four CDs of the same music just to get 10 minutes (or whatever it is) is pretty ridiculous. Not to mention the stupid extra takes of the main title on the first one, which while interesting don't make for a good album at ALL, especially with the huge amount of silence (I actually made a single exception in my library for that and added just the original take, with no huge silence, as a separate track in my own digital rip of it....previously when I listened I skipped it all together) Not to mention the somewhat bad sound quality of Jedi (pretty sure I've read later Sony releases sound the same, yes?) Not to mention, "covers pretty well" is not complete, is it? These are three of the most popular film scores ever written, if there's anything that ought to be complete in definitive form and the best sound possible, it's them. Edit: I just noticed this thread was from a year ago. And we DID get Empire of the Sun and it's wonderful, so there's that
