A few weeks ago I caught Francois Truffaut's The Bride Wore Black on german television. I wasn't too impressed by the movie itself (maybe too much 60's or maybe too much Truffaut or just not my cup of tea), but what a great score by Bernard Herrmann!

Ever since I wonder why there hasn't been a proper CD release of this gem, beside some tracks of some samplers - is it because of license issues?

If a release of the original score is not possible, could this be a job for the people who brought us Fahrenheit 451 - Mr Morgan and Mr Stromberg?

It's on our list!
I have a feeling that there is much music to be discovered that was cut out of this film. Like Fahrenheit, I imagine it would be like discovering a completely new Herrmann score.

Well then, stop typing and get on it!

Seriously, I don't know this score very well (the Bernstein suite, plus I saw a few minutes of the movie years and years ago), but what I know of it is great. I'd love to hear more!

Oddly, I just got a DVD of THE BRIDE WORE BLACK in the mail yesterday, one of many I've recently ordered. I have never seen this movie! I read the Cornell Woolrich book out by the pool about five years ago and enjoyed it, but I understand Truffaut took liberties with the book's ending. I have a copy of that French long play 45 on cd coupled with TWISTED NERVE and the sound is not the greatest; but it still sounds sharper than Bernstein's rerecorded suite. I would snap up a Tribute release.

Woo-hoo! Magnificent!
And I do apologize for leaving out Anna Bonn when I mentioned "the people that brought us Fahrenheit and the many other scores". Won't ever happen again!!!

And great news indeed from THE KENTUCKIAN on the other thread. Another must-have for sure!

This is a great movie, and a terrific score as well.

Heads up: TCM will be airing The Bride Wore Black on Tuesday, Sept. 29th @ 5pm PST.

I've become familiar with Herrmann's score via the Kritzerland release, but I've yet to see the film, so I'm looking forward to this.

It's a good but not great Truffaut, but a much better book - Woolrich is one of my faves.

Thanks for the tip. Just requested a copy of the book from my library.

One problem with this film for Anglophones is that the English subtitles fail to convey a lot of the black humor in the script. Much of the French spoken in the film is idiomatic and difficult to translate precisely.

Is Hangover Square on that list too?

Well, I definitely agree that the book is better than the movie, but I wouldn't go so far as to say the movie's good. For a picture that's supposed to be an hommage to Hitchcock, for me it's sorely lacking in suspense, tension, or psychological insight. Where Hitch can make you forget plot contrivances and questionable motivations through the sheer brilliance of his filmmaking and the breathless pace of his storytelling, Truffaut appears out of his element here and, sadly, cannot. The wonderful Jeanne Moreau and Herrmann's score are the best things about the film, but even they can't save it.

I don't speak French and so admittedly I am missing much of the nuance of the dialogue, but can black humor really make up for the film's other failings? I can't imagine it would.

On the other hand, Truffaut's second Woolrich adaptation, MISSISSIPPI MERMAID, is pretty darn good, certainly the better film of the two, IMO. No Herrmann for this one, though; it's got a spiky score by Antoine Duhamel.

Yes. I liked that movie and the score as well.

Kritzerland released BRIDE WORE BLACK on a CD coupled with TWISTED NERVE within the last year. It's sold-out from their site, but copies still pop up. The lowest one on Amazon right now is $47.50, but there's one offered on eBay right for $29.99. Looks like it ends sometime today.

Yeah but there was what, 13 minutes of music from it or something?
