Here's what I'm talking about: Late 50s, early 60s soundtracks mixing 20th Century composition with modern jazz. The overall mood suggests the Freudian nightmares of the harried post-WWII woking stiff living in an urban setting, or the new suburban landscape. A few examples include:

Jerry Goldsmith's TZ jazz themes
Fred Katz's "Little Shop of Horrors"
Some Kenyon Hopkins
Some of "The Chapman Report" Leonard Rosenman

What are some others that have this sound?

altough it's a bit later, I think The French Connection could qualify, as well as The Taking of Pelham 123

Yeah, definitely THE FRENCH CONNECTION scores, along with LAST TANGO IN PARIS.

Although not film music, I'd also recommend several Stan Kenton CD's, for example STAN KENTON CONDUCTS THE LA NEOPHONIC ORCHESTRA, which includes compositions by film music alumni John Williams and Russ Garcia.

NP: YO YO MA PLAYS THE MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS

Thanks for the replies. I have both Pelham and Connection. While I see the connection (couldn't resist), these are not quite in the same bag, though close. Both take on a slightly funky quality in places - especially Pelham - that puts them into more of an early 70s bag.

"longhair" -as in Stravinsky, Bartok, etc.

Imagine if Stravinsky, Schoenberg, and Bartok had a baby with Monk, Ellington and Parker. He grew up to work in an ad agency, had a bunch of angry clients, and was working on multiple deadlines on a caffeine jag with a hangover. That's the sound.

A few more:

"Toss Me a Scalpal" from "The Interns" - Leith Stevens
Some of the dramatic cues from "Touch of Evil" - Mancini
Parts of Kenton's take on "West Side Story"
The cue from "La Dolce Vita" with the vibes, jazz rhythm and clarinets playing in intervals of seconds.

And, as they say in the ad biz, many many more!

Any others?

I think Meyer Kupferman´s score for Blast of Silence would qualify.

Never heard of this. Is it on LP or CD?

Yes, Stan Kenton employs this sound occasionally. I'll have to check this one out; never knew he did one with Garcia or Williams involvement.

Thanks all!

There are many of Kupferman´s concert works on CD but unfortunaly none of his filmworks. I only know Blast of Silence which is a harsh and dark Jazz score. It was really a surprise. The film is very good to, I think it´s out on DVD.

How about David Amram´s The Manchurian Candidate?

I am not sure about hair length, but how about these?

Quincy Jones In Cold Blood
Miles Davis Elevator to the Gallows
Chico Hamilton Repulsion
Krzysztof Komeda Knife in the Water
Alex North A Streetcar Named Desire and maybe Death of A Salesman
Elmer Bernstein The Man with the Golden Arm

NP: In no way related to this thread! Peyton Place (Franz Waxman)

You're right on target. I have most of these, or they are at least on my radar.

BTW, there is supposedly a CD coming out that has music from Chico Hamilton's "Repulsion" score and his "Sweet Smell of Success" contributions.

Sounds like Four Flies on Grey Velvet to me...

And maybe (one I know that is, sadly, not available):

Jerry Goldsmith's "Seconds"

Quite a nightmarish suburban nightmare, and a fun film.

I have that one. Yes, Morricone occasionally hit on this sound in his crime and giallo soundtracks, but everything he does comes out sounding like Morricone - or Bruno Nicolai!

Forgot Jerry scored that one! There's a fine future release...

Varese released selections from Amram's MANCHURIAN score on the same CD as Rachael Portman's remake score.

CD. Complete on an oop CD, highlights on a Varese CD paired with Rachel Portman´s score from the remake.

This is most likely a bootleg.
