Which orchestral score would you recommend ( only 2 or 3) of scores that are not so widley known ? No STAR WARS_STAR TREKS_BONDS_POTTERS_MARVELS_etc. Interesting for me more the big orchestras rather than small chamber ones....
My brain implodes when the parameters are too wide like this. There are a million great 'not so familiar' orchestral scores. Any more specific criteria we could use? Timeframe? Particular scores or composers as reference? Genres?
Hahaha...yes..maybe the question is just too wide open for interpretation you are right... mmmmh..dont know...how about select the 2 scores that are the "biggest" ones in terms of orchestra... If I should recommend 2 scores ( for the non europeans, who might be not so familiar with European stuff) I´d always go for Rolf Wilhelm`s DIE NIBELNGEN and Martin Böttchers WINNETOU Scores ...
Early scores by Frederic Talgorn (90s/00s) and Philippe Rombi (00's) are both lush and scored for large orchestra. If you like those traditional scores by Williams, Goldsmith, Horner, Barry etc, you will dig theirs.
The most obscure treasure in my collection is Toru Takemitsu's Glowing Autumn.
It was released in Japan in the 1990s by Soundtrack Listeners Communications, and it's a gorgeous, romantic score, with Delerue-worthy sweeping lyricism.
It's hard to find, but if you come across a copy, I recommend grabbing it!
I guess to narrow it down a bit.. Horner_Williams_Goldsmiths_Desplats_Morricone_Mancini etc.etc. those are all well known fellas and for me not really hidden gems But nevertheless thank you all!!!
By a famous American composer, albeit one who did not write many film scores.
A number of these cues were composed for the mini series but were left on the "cutting room floor." Fortunately, Gould recorded an extended suite in London with the National Philharmonic (about 70 musicians) later in 1978.
Not sure on the criteria except not Williams/Zimmer/Star Wars/Harry Potter/etc, but here are a few I liked.
Dan Romer -- Luca Harry Gregson-Williams -- The Martian Daniel Pemberton -- Space Dive Nigel Godrich -- Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Christophe Beck -- Free Guy Justin Hurwitz -- First Man Matthew Margeson -- Eddie The Eagle Henry Jackman -- Cherry Christopher Drake -- The Dark Knight Returns Austin Wintory -- Journey (also, Traveler: A Journey Symphony)
I also know you said no Marvel, but I still have to recommend John Paesano -- "Marvel's Spider-Man" (original video game soundtrack) as one of my favorites, video game or comic-property notwithstanding.
