Another delightfully off-the-path score (for the most part). Those two cues when he's on the street at the theater trying to pick up a girl, just good stuff. I cited nearly every single cue. Maybe, just maybe an Emmy nomination should have been considered. I know, Frontiere really wrote his hands off for this series and you could probably say that about many episode scores.

I actually had an idea like this for a fan fiction I never wrote for the "Baa Baa Black Sheep"/"Black Sheep Squadron" series where the lead and the Jap' he squared off against sometimes in aarial battles ("Heeeyyy Boington!"), get stranded on an island together and have to come to terms with each other. I even have a page or two of plot outlines, but I admit it'll never be written. Mine had a much happier ending though and forced the two to come together rather than the some what and some what predictable path this episode took.

Richard Donner directs the season two premiere in which Frank Savage is killed off, off screen. NAZI's surprise his bomber, fire on him, sending him flying away from the squadron. A commander comes in to tell them later at base that the French underground reported one survivor and it was not Savage.
Paul Burke takes over as lead of the show. Reportedly the ratings tanked quickly, but I have to have some doubt about that as it lasted two more full seasons. Burke had been in two prior episodes, including the pilot episode.
The IMDb Trivia page for the show gives multiple reasons for his replacement, but I think all are true. It goes something like: Robert Lansing was difficult to work with and so they decided to replace him with a new lead, citing they wanted a younger lead (Burke only looks younger; he's two years older in real life). ABC reportedly told Quinn Martin that Lansing had to go.
I prefer to think that Savage lived and that the French underground lied 'cause either they were sneaking him on a secret mission or knew they had a traitor in their midst. Komansky claims he left and Savage and the other crew member were dead. He either could be lying to cover up for the secret mission or only thought Savage was dead (or "mostly dead" as per "The Princess Bride").
So I again prefer to think that had a season four happened, they'd have worked him back in.
Or, you know, he wakes up from a dtug-induced sleep under NAZI interrogation it was all a dream.

I wonder if he watched the show any and recognized the opening eight notes from Alexander Courage's fanfare from "Star Trek", in the show from time-to-time. Interestingly enough, I don't recall spotting it in this episode (maybe a conscious decision by Frontiere?).
Take it with a grain of salt, but a guy once posted on one of the suite videos on my Youtube channel that Courage was friend (if I recall that part correctly) with Frontiere and would attend or once attended the sessions. In this episode he plays a bomber who was born in Germany. In real life not only is Shatner Jewish and would have been gassed or marched on a death march, he was born in Canada -- which may be just as bad since they gave us Celine Dion and she's still with us... ;-)

Paul Burke takes over as lead of the show. Reportedly the ratings tanked quickly, but I have to have some doubt about that as it lasted two more full seasons.
Well, a season and a half-ish. The third year was cut short at 17. It really was languishing at the bottom of the ratings. But it was never a hit to begin with. If it were, Lansing probably would have been kept on. The series was always struggling, so they jettisoned the dour and "unlikeable" Savage, changed the format to an action adventure/romance series and moved it to an earlier timeslot.
I didn't mind Burke so much, but he wasn't particularly strong. He also had some really weird pronunciations, saying words like "signature" as "signa-CHURE" and "Sandy" as "Sahndy." He also had a habit of looking away from people during confrontations. Apparently Chris Robinson was the popular favorite and Burke was threatened by his more powerful personality. So, Komanski was de-emphasized.
Burke was not an audience favorite and Lansing was treated so badly, he refused to do an exit episode or take a recurring role in the position Andrew Duggan would take in the series. They actually fired Lansing before the end of the first season and he had to do two or three more episodes knowing he was on his way out.
"Big Brother" could have been a good episode for Burke's character, but Jack Lord was so terrible in it, it was distracting. And, in true Quinn Martin fashion, when Lord came back in the third year it was as a totally different character.
I wonder if he watched the show any and recognized the opening eight notes from Alexander Courage's fanfare from "Star Trek", in the show from time-to-time. Interestingly enough, I don't recall spotting it in this episode (maybe a conscious decision by Frontiere?).
Well the episode aired a full year before Star Trek began shooting, so I'd have to say there was no reason connected to Shatner to leave off the 8 note theme.
Are all of these episodes really freshly scored? I've watched the series once through at least two times and it always felt tracked, as if Frontiere created a library for them to draw from (like Pete Rugolo did for The Fugitive).

I simply didn't check the years of the two shows -- my mistake.
I can't say if many episodes were originally scored, but many cues seem way too tailored.
And yes, there is some tracking and I don't doubt at all I've cited tracked cues more than once.
One thing I did note there are certain cues that he would do slight variations of, almost unnoticeable unless you went from episode-to-episode like I have, just like Peter T. Meyers did on "Falcon's Crest" with that opening cue.
