La-La Land Records and Warner Bros. proudly present the remastered and expanded 2-CD reissue of legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith’s (PLANET OF THE APES, THE OMEN, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, BASIC INSTINCT), original motion picture score to the 1978 big-screen bees-gone-amok THE SWARM, starring Michael Caine, Katherine Ross and Richard Widmark, and directed and produced by the remarkable Irwin Allen. Giant in scope and sound, Jerry Goldsmith’s rip-roaring action score is an indestructible, hard-charging marvel of orchestration. This remastered, deluxe “Expanded Archival Collection” presentation showcases the maestro’s film score on Disc One, while Disc Two presents the CD world premiere of the original 1978 LP program, featuring unique edits and takes, and additional bonus cues! Produced by Bruce Botnick and Neil S. Bulk and entirely re-mixed and mastered in high resolution by Botnick from first generation ½’’ analog studio vault elements, this special release is limited to 3000 units and features exclusive, in depth liner notes by “The Fantasy Film Worlds of Irwin Allen” author Jeff Bond and stingingly sharp art direction by Dan Goldwasser.

This release is MQA encoded. Listeners with an MQA decoder can enjoy this album in high resolution, up to 176.4 kHz/24-bit, from these Compact Discs. For more information please visit https://www.mqa.co.uk/.

I have no personal experience with MQA, and no opinion about it, but I've always trusted Linn as a fine audio manufacturer:

https://www.linn.co.uk/blog/mqa-is-bad-for-music

After reading that, I also read another piece that said the audio company Meridian was responsible for developing MQA. I seem to remember Linn and Meridian being keen competitors some years ago (and might still be for all I know), so maybe that has something to do with the negative article on the Linn site?

Now this is being encoded onto our CDs by one of our specialist soundtrack labels, one thing I'd like to know is if MQA encoded discs will behave the same way as standard CDs when being imported as 16-bit files for home editing in audio editing programs.

The MQA is the new encoding that Bruce Botnick had been talking about quite excitingly recently. This should be interesting for the Audiphile techies.

Nice to see they've separated the Main Title from the Red Two track.
It always bugged me that the Prometheus release opening track went on for 7 minutes.

Initially excited this release, until I saw the letters MQA! In short, you need an MQA equipped DAC to play it back in its full quality. Basically, it’s the HDCD debacle all over again. MQA is not taking off, does not offer lossless sound, and (key point) was partially created as a way to create a format monopoly complete with built-in DRM (Digital Rights Management):

Further reading for anybody interested:

https://audiophilestyle.com/ca/reviews/mqa-a-review-of-controversies-concerns-and-cautions-r701/

Decently mastered releases do not need nor benefit from MQA in the real world. MQA is a way for one provider to try to gain a format monopoly, sell new gear, and for record companies to sell the same albums to the public yet again via a DRM hobbled format. Don’t believe the hype...

MQA is BAD, BAD, BAD. What the hell were LL thinking??? MQA was deemed harmful years ago. If you have the time:

Read the above where professional people who understand digital technologies tells you to avoid it.

Shame, as Goldsmith and his fans deserve better.

I received an email just after midnight from their mailing list blast.

On MQA - I actually own one of the OPPO blu-ray players that decodes that. (Had no idea until I went to the MQA website.) Guess I will try out playback. Usually the CDs get ripped at lossless and put away.

I sure hope the results are better than those awful DSD/SACD mixes Botnick did on the Varese GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY, and the Goldsmith LSO recordings for Telarc.

I knew the day would come that this would be re-released, and I knew that day I'd be on the fence.

On the one hand, I already have the original motion picture soundtrack LP as well as the expanded film score release from Prometheus a few years back. So I thought I take a pass.

But now the MQA is the kicker. I have a few high-res files, but no MQA encoded audio CD so far, and I would be interested in playing around with that format. Add to that extended Jeff Bond liner notes, and sigh... I have to shell out some more dough for this score yet once more. :-) (Of course, it is an excellent score, that helps.)

So long as the music on the CD is 44/16 lossless which I can rip and putting the CD in my PC wont infect it with any software then I cant say i'm really bothered whether the disc is MQA or not as I'll never be getting the equipment to play it.

But, 2 great titles coming from LLL both of which will be mine.... all mine......

Gee... should I remind that a CD isn't meant to be ripped out, converted to digital files on your computer and thrown away after.

It's a physical product that's supposed to be enjoyed as what it is, put in a player and, well... played.
