The Pixar animated film ONWARD will be released soon. Voices are by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland. (I couldn't find this topic in the search engine.)

At the new movie opening, Pratt said to bring LOTS of Kleenex. What excites me is that the score is by Mychael and Jeff Danna. I absolutely LOVED their score for THE GOOD DINOSAUR. I’m hoping for another great score for this movie. Below is what the Danna brothers said about their score.

“Composers and brothers Mychael and Jeff Danna deeply connect with the main characters, too. The musicians lost their dad when they were teenagers, and say the process of scoring the film together, with its sweeping orchestral music, was “therapeutic” for their relationship, bringing up “things we hadn’t said to each other and really processed,” says Mychael.”

I like “sweeping orchestral music.”

I like the Good Dinosaur score quite a bit, an interesting blend of kind of folk acoustic and orchestral.
What is interesting is that I read an interview with these guys some years back and they expressed how completely disinterested they were in the Goldsmith and Williams orchestral sound. But it certainly seems like they have come around.

I am a big fan of Brandi Carlile and she also did the song for this film I'm looking forward to checking out.

Ado, I didn't know they said that about Goldsmith and Williams. Interesting. I think they have "come around."

Ryan, hope the song is great.

HI Joan, It is in one of my many books on music. I will try to dig it out and quote it back here.

Here it is. This is a quote from the old, but still good book "Knowing the Score" by David Morgan.
This interview is only with Mychael Danna.

"You've worked with Atom Egoyan since the very beginning of both your careers how did you meet up?'

This is a longer answer about their youth. But this is the interesting part;

"I actually did not even like films. I had no interest at all in being a film composer, and the John Williams/Jerry Goldsmith school of film music made me vomit-you know, it was the last possible thing i'd ever want to spend my life doing"

Funny how things change over time

Vomit? Wow, that is ugly. I love the Williams-Goldsmith school of music.

I think things must have changed for him because he and his brother composed scores like the following.

Hope they give us another solid animated score.

[triggered-rant] Wow, nice way to sh*t on two film score legends and their entire body of work over 50 plus years. You cant get anymore arrogant and dismissive than that. This is the problem with Hollywood nowadays, composers who don't like films, writers who don't like the genres they're writing for, just a madhouse of mayhem. [/triggeredrant]

I find their work bland. I’ll give this a listen, but my expectations aren’t high.

I finally got the Camelot cd relatively recently, after enjoying their music in that less than perfect production, and I love that cd. Gave it a listen today after reading this thread earlier. They do like the eastern touch don't they? I hear it mainly in the percussion.

Yeah, that statement shocked me at the time I read it, and obviously it stuck with me. And it really does seem that he changed quite a lot over time. Perhaps his brother influenced him and he became more accepting of the traditional scores of our heroes. I agree that Good Dinosaur ironically sounds like something that Jerry would have composed for one of his orchestral western scores.

Well, let me speak up for him a little here. This interview was quite a number of years ago, so it did reflect his thoughts on his feelings even further back when he was younger. He does not go on to really explain any softening in his perspective at that time in that book. But I think you can see that some of this work he has done with his brother has come around to a sound something akin to Jerry and John Williams.

I was trying to think of it like kids listening to rock and roll and being sick of hearing the parents play Montovani, just the feeling of rebellion, oddly he grew up at almost the perfect era to appreciate John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith, since he was born in 1958. So he would have been about 18-20 when those guys were composing some of their most legendary and fantastic film scores.

Yeah, a lot of early Mychael Danna scores could be classed as 'world music'. Very Asian in sound style and design.
I think their larger, more orchestral scores incorporate the heavy hand of orchestrator/conducter Nicholas Dodd, who's been known to flex his own muscles during his part of the process.

I must say that nothing in any of the previews I've seen is making me want to rush out and watch this...and you're talking to a guy who was excited for Cars 2.

Still, the Danna brothers have done fine work in animation (and it is pretty touching how the project brought them closer together), so I'm certainly looking forward to the music, at least.

I am not sure I will love the movie, but I do enjoy pulling out a Kleenex now and then. Can't say I notice the brothers' scores all the time. I did like On The Basis of Sex and purchased The Good Dinosaur. Like you, I am for sure looking forward to the music.

I'm not the biggest fan of Pixar, but there seems to be a consensus they have the worst previews for their movies, even for the good ones.

Reviews are out. I read about 8 reviews looking for comments about the music. I'd say half of the critics didn't care for this movie, and half liked it. I only saw one comment about the music, and the reviewer called the music "drippy." If that means sentimental or emotional, I'm fine with that kind of music.

I wonder if Nicholas Dodd helped the Danna Brothers on this one?
