SEASON 1:

1978 -- seems so long ago yet not that long ago.

    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x711kxh
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDtACYPOimw

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:45 in.
  • 5:15 in.
  • 7:48 in.
  • 9:51 in.
  • 14:08 in.
  • 17:45 in. And the disco-flavored cue after the commercial break.
  • 20:17 in. Including some more disco flavor.
  • 26:37 in.
  • 28:39 in.
  • 39:21 in. And about a second after it ends, some disco music! I recognize those electric guitar licks from "CHiPs" -- surely has to be Carol Kaye (Immel probably set the beat and certain ideas, and let the trusted sessions players go at it I imagine; stuff like that used to happen back then more than I suspect we know). And then immediately following that two disco renditions of the show's theme music. Over ten minutes, all the way to the end of the episode.

    SEASON 2:

    "Reunion: Part 1"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71area
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ojh5ppr2lK8

    Highlights:
  • 1:45 in.
  • 9:34 in. Perhaps a rejected take of the theme that was given a second shot as a cue?
  • 14:16 in.
  • 32:30 in.
  • 48:29 in.

For the guys here: 3:45 in. You're welcome.

    "Reunion: Part 2"
    By: Jerrold Immel
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71are9
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIwrERfr3Qo

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 3:01 in. Short and soft rendition of the main theme.
  • 19:47 in.
  • 33:03 in.
  • 36:47 in.
  • 47:25 in.

A lot of quiet material in this episode score.

    "Old Acquaintance"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71are8
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBUoT_JvhI8

    Highlights:
  • 9:02 in.
  • 13:28 in.
  • 17:25 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 19:39 in.
  • 32:48 in.
  • 35:48/37:30 in.
  • 39:43 in.

    "Bypass"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71c2vh
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWFiBi5v4d4

    Highlights:
  • 1:55 in.
  • 7:14 in.
  • 12:23 in.
  • 14:34 in.
  • 26:27 in. Some obvious influence from his "CHiPs" theme
  • 45:30 in.

    "Black Market Baby"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71c2vf
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9m_7rWT5mw

    Highlights:
  • 11:00 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 23:42 in. Certainly not anything I was expecting to hear in "Dallas".
  • About 27:50 in.
  • 33:08 in.
  • 38:48 in. Acoustic guitar backing with an alto flute playing over it. Also, it's a "For the guys here" scene...
  • 42:39 in.

Funky, groovy, with a beat, more like "CHiPs" meets a 1970's pimp film.

    "Double Wedding"
By: Richard Lewis Warren and Ken Harrison
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71c2vg
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44Y7vUjYM8Y

  • 26:01 in.
  • 29:10 in.
  • 33:58 in.
  • 40:35 in.
  • 47:39 in.

Yes, both composers are credited. I suspect that since Warren is a series regular and this is the only episode Harrison scored, that Harrison has parts of his score replaced.

    "Runaway"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71d6h9
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnWao9sUuT0

  • 12:25 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 14:16 in.
  • 22:35 in.
  • 28:37 in.
  • 32:41 in.
  • 37:29 in. I swear I've heard part of or all of this theme in an episode he scored of "Gunsmoke".
  • 42:08 in.

    "Election"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71d6hb
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4E7uI3chmc

    Highlights:
  • 1:44 in.
  • 9:18 in.
  • 25:16 in.
  • 31:25 in.
  • 36:44 in. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 45:44 in. 47:01 is where it gets good though.

    Continuing SEASON 2:

    "Survival"
    By: John Parker

    Highlights:
  • 1:48 in.
  • 5:18 in.
  • 18:47 in.
  • 34:14 in.
  • 39:06 in. To the end of the episode.

    "Act of Love"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71faw6
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luJoCWEUjeE

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 1:44 in.
  • 10:31 in. About 11:05 in is when it gets cool.
  • 15:47 in.
  • 33:54 in.
  • 35:42 in.
  • 37:21 in.

    "Triangle"
    By: John Parker
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71faw7
    Warner Bros. purchase link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uusmPcGbPNo

    Highlights:
  • 13:07 in.
  • 17:49 in.
  • 24:28 in.
  • 29:56 in.
  • 34:30 in.
  • 41:30 in.
  • 44:30 in.
  • 47:15 in.

It was a little shaky with Parker for the first two or three episodes, but he's settled in with these fun cues with a beat, nicely.

I can't guarantee this episode and up are the correct episodes; I encountered video mis-labeling and had to fix everything below, but didn't want to spend the time checking these.

  • 21:08 in.
  • 25:40 in.

  • 39:08 in.

  • 31:29 in. More disco source music. And the score cue that immediately follows it.
  • 41:46 in.
  • 43:29 in.

For the guys here: 4:44 in. You're welcome. You might want to hang around for over a minute.

    SEASON 4:

    All of season four.

There was a union strike and most of season four was either tracked and/or had original

scoring by John Scott. I don't have a firm answer and so I am skipping all those episodes. Below is where the strike apparently ended, as composers started being credited again.

I'm not interested in the details of the strike, so this is all I will say about it.

Sadly, the resolve of "Who shot J.R.?" fell before the original scoring returned.
Over a decade later "The Simpsons" would do their own thing on this, with "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"; even the second part of the episode had it's own light parody of the reveal.

  • 36:01 in.
  • 41:27 in. Biting staccato brass, strings, lower octave piano hits, and more. Mostly drama with some tense stuff. Over three minutes long, to the end of the episode.

That's most of the score. I can't image skipping any of the cues I cited, on an official release.
Sometimes it's baffling why some episode scores get nominated for an award and others don't.

Even though Broughton appears to often have trouble finding out what to do and when to score on the series, when he does do scoring, a lot of times it's interesting and way more colorfully orchestrated then the show even needs (which is not an insult), so it's often interesting to hear.

    J.R.: "Nobody's ever gonna get ol' J.R.."

Well, then, I will pick up from where you left off.

The musicians were also involved in this union strike.

Having seen season 4 originally when it was on CBS, I can tell you this was library stock music that Lorimar also used on its other TV shows at the time (like “8 Is Enough”). Hard to believe though that John Scott (if he did indeed contribute any original music on the strike episodes) also wrote the bombastic score for “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes”.

David Rose, on the other hand, refused to go this route for “Little House on the Prairie” for the most part, so he used tracked music from his scores for earlier episodes. The only time that library music was ever used during the strike season was during some minor sections for the two-part episode “To See The Light”.

Believe it or not, tracked music is still used today for TV shows, especially sitcoms.

Hey Justin. Thanks for doing this, especially in calling attention to Bruce Broughton's exemplary work on this series. As good as his scores in the seasons already profiled are I find that his Season 8 work (his last season on the show) is simply as good as television music gets, his final two scores for the series, "Dead Ends" and "Terms of Estrangement" (the latter, featuring, IMO, some of the most sophisticated-sounding string writing for series television, recorded just before Bruce left to start work on "Silverado") being two of my all-time favorites (and two scores that couldn't be more different in terms of tone, orchestration).

Now everyone here knows why I am 'Broughtfan,' Bruce, to my mind, being one of this country's shinning film composer lights. Says volumes that when Jerry G had to bow out of "Tombstone" he recommended Bruce for the job (could any composer/aspiring composer on this board imagine a more confirmed validation of one's work, especially coming from someone of Goldsmith's stature?)

Any plans to do Quincy? Hawaii Five-O? Amazing Stories?

    You're welcome.

Any plans to do Quincy? Hawaii Five-O? Amazing Stories?

As I concentrate on series that have no had any official releases, or small piddly ones (like "Gunsmoke"), "Amazing Stories" is not a consideration.

I'm waiting for news from Intrada about whether or not they can proceed with "Hawaii Five-O" once the lawsuit over the theme is over.

No plans at this time for "Quincy", but I'll never say never.

Justin, did you come across any "Dynasty" or "Falcon Crest" score as highly stylized as the "Ewing Blues?" BTW: orchestration (18 players): Alto Sax, Trumpet, 2 Pianos/Electric Piano, Harp, Guitar (steel, nylon and 12 string), 1 Perc (doubling timpani, triangle, glock, etc.) 6 Viole (viola), 4 Celli, One CB (I did an analysis of the cues for a short paper).

If ever a score deserved a music composition Emmy this one did. At times melancholy, at times playful, at times ominous, at times plaintive, this superb score covers the gamut of moods/situations and does so most effectively. Just a great study in not only musical mood setting but also in variation/reharmonization techniques (thematic material harmonized in triads, thirds/fourths mix, etc.)...and it's just plain cool (the main siciliana-like figure is, to my mind, quite Faure-like).

Love "Ewing Inferno," too (and the cliffhanger resolution, "The Road Back," the following season). These episodes had maybe the largest "Dallas" episode orchestra recorded (forty-five or thereabouts players on the "fire cues", if I recall correctly). My guess is that Immel recorded both parts in the same session, probably along with the season 7 main title arrangement. Probably my favorite "Immel Dallas," the expanded orchestra giving the fire scenes, in particular, quite the feature film feel.
