Hundreds of them.

Found three boxes of (mostly) soundtrack cassettes in the garage. They've been in there for maybe 20 years, in the cold and damp. Perhaps unsurprisingly, two of the first three tapes I tried didn't play properly: MR BASEBALL lasted about 20 seconds before slurring drunkenly. There's no way I'm going through them all to see if any of them are still okay, especially as I have them all (give or take a few) on CD anyway. Sadly I can't do anything else with them but send them to landfill.

Here's a few: these are just the Varese ones:

Impressive collection! I never liked the format personally and hardly bought anything on them, apart from blank ones to record songs from the radio. I find it even stranger than the return of vinyl that some stuff is available again on cassette format.

Whoa, I did not even know some of these were still released on Cassette... I switched from LPs to CDs some time in the mid 1980s, and never bought any pre-recorded Cassettes anyway, so I was not sure for how long the format stuck around. (Of course, I used cassettes to record some stuff).

I would not throw these out on a landfill though... they are somehow an interesting relict from another era. Perhaps there is a collector somewhere who might by happy to find them a new home.

I don't have many soundtrack releases on cassette - maybe half a dozen (The Gerhardt recording of Herrmann was the first - One pound out Boots the Chemist). I never listen to them.

But AMAZINGLY (I found out), the very first cassette of "taped direct from the telly" still works, so I've just listened to Franz Waxman's 9-second End Title card from THE DEVIL DOLL - the first piece of film music I ever "had", taped on August 18, 1973.

I know that vcr-tape restoration firms dry the tapes as the first step in their restoration process. They have a specially programmed oven for that but maybe just letting the tapes acclimatise for a long while (attic during a hot summer) might make the moist completely leave the magnetic emulsion. Another thing that wrecks the play is the friction between the tape wheels and the casing, and the uneven roll up on the wheels that makes the tape roll get squeezed by the casing. I know that from endless past experiences. Sometimes squeezing the tapes to flatten the roll helped.
One kind of damage that I have no solution for, and I doubt anyone has, is the static ticking and complete fading out. I think that is caused by wear or some other damage the the magnetic emulsion itself. Once that started, there's nothing you can do. it might even get on the cassette player's head and contaminate other tapes.

D.S.

If I were you I would find some way to make a photographic collage of the front sides with the artwork, maybe line them all up on the floor flat and take a picture, then you could make a poster, or use it for a blog photo backing, and of course, share it will all of us.

I personally think that would be really cool.

If you hang onto them until next Halloween, I think they'd be a cool surprise for a Trick Or Treat handout. I never owned a Varese cassette, they are pretty cool.

If you do decide to toss them out - please keep the cardboard sleeves at least on the inside - they don't take up a lot of space, and they would be worth holding onto.

SO much nostalgia from looking at those spines. smile

I seriously collected mostly cassettes until...early 1995? By '96, I had switched over exclusively to CDs, but I still remember the satisfaction of slamming a cassette into my Walkman or boombox and rocking out to the latest Goldsmith or Williams score. Plus, making "mix tapes"...

That would be cool! I also had to dump three boxes of pre-recorded cassette tapes about two years ago. I simply had no space for them.

Funny. I've gone back to collecting cassettes this year. It's been a fun time of seeking, but one tape perpetually elludes me. The Cassablanca/Polygram issue of ALIEN. Did it turn up in your collection?

I know this post is better suited for the "Trading Post", but...

If anyone else reading this has a copy that they dont mind selling, let me know.

Gosh, I loved cassettes as a kid. I remember well using scissors and sellotape to mend broken bits.

I also remember recording loads of chart singles off the radio, and being fairly good at deleting as much of the dj as possible.

Happy days.

Most importantly...the Walkman!

Still listen to my cassettes in the car, but rarely listen to the pre-recorded ones... I just record my CDs onto Maxells!

Hercules wow they are beautiful! I don’t know how you could throw them away.
I started with cassettes too but a little earlier so I’ve never seen a lot of them.
How cool is The Eiger Sanction cassette?

Indeed! I'll take em. Will pay for shipping to transport them to a welcoming home if your plan is to simply dump them!

Definitely take photos before parting with them. I did that when I got rid of some VHS titles, and I'm glad I did. The pictures take up no space, and preserve your memories of the thing.

I still got a fully functional Technics Cassette deck as well as a functioning Sony Walkman, so I could actually still play those. smile
Both are over twenty years old, but in good condition and were seldom used. (No, I'm not offering them for sale here. big grin ) They are stored in their boxes.

I still have my VCR, but I'm afraid to test it. I'm thinking the first tape I put in there will get hopelessly wrapped around the heads in a crumpled mess. I don't know whether the fault would lie in the old machine or the old tape, but in the end it wouldn't matter. One of these days I ought to test it, though, and see.

The same thing can happen with audio cassettes, especially ones in the condition Hercule described. Those are souvenirs now; I would never put them in my player.
