I've heard this opined from a couple of members, and at first I was as dubious as the many who will shell-shockedly check this thread out.
I must admit however: I've listened at length to the album on youtube (which of course is a very compressed and imperfect way to listen, I know), and it is really a strong effort imo.
I'm curious how other members feel about this CD and its manifold releases.
Once again, I'm super grateful for any help!

In my personal opinion, as a whole, I prefer the complete score to TFF over TMP. Even on a sections basis, I typically take only three cues from TMP, whereas I take multiple cues from TFF.

Er, yeah....so Final Frontier is, much like The Shadow, a revelatory expansion, and also, as in that case, the old album sequence is helpfully retained, to remind you how good we got it now.
I hated the old Epic album, missing music and weird sequencing - feel it was a rare bomb in JG's album producing. The complete is a score you can't turn off once it starts however. Funny how these things work.
It's not always the case....Deep Rising was fine at 32mins. but a real slog at 70mins. now.
I'm not sure trying the original albums first is a great idea....I guess it is an interesting experiment. For me, first impression is a big one. Really hard to discern at my age lol.

Both are excellent, film tracks gets the edge with a few mins. of extra, terrific music. Just wait till ya live with this stuff for 20-30 years an d get to educate future generations yourself!

I guess I missed the point of this thread in the first place, that's a first!
Why compete, both are excellent, very different works from very different periods for the composer. Ten years used to be a hell of a gap in time.
This is exactly what interested me; the way the scoring differed.

They're very different scores for very different films. For what it's worth, I find both films pretty much unwatchable (to everybody about to post phrases like "not that bad" and "closest in tone to the original series," you're more than welcome to your opinions, but mine is not changing). But while TMP is a long, self-serious dissertation with big existential ideas, its pacing and lengthy, often soundless effects sequences gave Goldsmith a wonderful opportunity for grandiose, mysterious, and beautiful music. TFF has a muddled idea at its center, and is tonally all over the place (where TMP could have used a joke or two, TFF has a bunch of very bad jokes), and it lurches from clumsy action scenes to mystical sequences to goofy comedy.
If you love TFF, enjoy! To me, the Enterprise theme (so majestic as it sings in TMP) makes a clunky action theme in TFF. Goldsmith's obsession with sounds (the "turbine" whirring to life sound under the Courage fanfare, the ram's horn in the Klingon theme) feels cheesy to me here, the synths sound thin, and the action sequences feel generic. The God/barrier music later in the film is more to my taste, and that's where the score comes to life for me. It's good… but to me, not nearly the equal of TMP.
I'm sure these are fighting words to some people, but this is my take. I put TFF on a month or so ago, and I was a bit relieved when it was over. TMP never gets old for me.

Joking aside, IMHO, TMP is a masterpiece, and TFF is 'just' great.
I got converted a little over a month ago with the La La Land TMP.
