Shouldn't those be in an archive somewhere?

Yes, they should be at UCLA or Julliard or something.
And really a CD would be just fine, and easier to actually listen to.

I wouldn't think it would have been legal to sell them on eBay.
So could Intrada or La-La Land buy these a release Jaws and the Star Wars scores?

Probably legal to sell/buy the tapes, but not legal to produce CD's from these sources unless they got a license from the copyright holders.

I would have thought Disney, Universal would own the respective recordings. I know I wouldn't want them in my possession once they came 'a callin.'

BTW: If these are the masters how were the Special Editions of these scores produced?

Just wonder - is it legal to sell such kind of tapes?
And if it's original tapes, how the hell they could appear somewhere except studios vaults?!

Could it also mean no more reissues?

Oh wait..the Star Wars scores were archived in DSD.

They come from the estate of John Neal, who was a sound engineer for Lucas and Spielberg. I believe he passed away many years ago.

This is a good question, since I thought the Star Wars and Empire Special Editions were sourced from the original masters?

This really annoys me.

Why?

Who is doing this?

Those items are priceless.

Whoever ends up buying them - will no doubt simply leave them in a garage or something like that I presume, it will gather dust. We will not see those scores get the proper deluxe treatment they deserve.

Why couldn't they do a proper release before they sell it to a person who might not even give a shit about the music anyway!

If an investor buys it, then we are all screwed.....

When I say investor, I'm talking about a rich politician or someone with a high paying job for example.

On the other hand, if someone like Intrada or La La Land buys it.... or possibly Lukas Kendall, Michael Matessino, Neil S. Bulk for that matter, then I know those will be in safe hands.

But then again, it is an auction. Those should have NEVER been put up on ebay. What is the world coming to????

All about money.... Somethings should be left as they are, or talked about with a few people - if they didn't want to do the proper mastering, then give it to someone who will.

I remember reading on the Fanderson site that the original Space: 1999 sessions tapes sounded horrible until they were 'baked.' Assuming an individual could legally own these recordings, how much would it cost to make them playable (these tapes being nearly as old as the 1999 tapes).

Hopefully these will fall into the possession of the American Heritage Center or the AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences).

I wouldn't be so sure... there are a lot of people who buy film prints (especially Star Wars prints) for the purpose of preserving them, not to add to a collection or let them rot. Whoever buys the reels at these prices probably wouldn't let them go to waste or at least I would hope not! I hope someone reputable or a reputable company gets a hold of them...

I'll kick in $20 if you set it up. These should be preserved! Has anyone alerted the labels.

I also love the "EXCELLENT Condition always maintained in climate controlled environment” statement. So they're in excellent condition and the seller's going to send them out with the US postal service. Great idea because the postal service is really known for treating delicate packages SO well!

Chris.

Will one of the label producers weigh in on this? What does this REALLY mean? Is it as tragic as it actually seems?

I could see someone like Michael Giacchino bidding on these as it's my understanding that he collects film music memorabilia.

The starting bid on Star Wars is $7,500? Expect this amount to quickly escalate.

That is why THIS it is a CRAZY way of doing business!

Why sell them on ebay?

It's one of the most unique, priceless, rarest items on the planet, and they are treating it like a piece of jewelry.

Whoever is selling this, has no respect for the film industry, John Williams, or for that matter, have a good ear for quality music.

If it was a girl, I certainly wouldn't be marrying her!
