The latest release from La-La Land is the fourth in their 1701 COLLECTION series of episode scores from the original STAR TREK (previously included in the label's massive boxed-set). This release features scores from the series' third and final season, by composers Alexander Courage ("The Enterprise Incident," "Plato's Stepchildren"), Jerry Fielding ("Spectre of the Gun") and Gerald Fried ("The Paradise Syndrome"), plus source music and other cues from the episodes "Requiem for Methuselah," "The Way to Eden" and "Whom Gods Destroy."

The latest release from Caldera is the first release of the original score tracks for Roy Budd's score from the 1970 Western SOLIDER BLUE, starring Peter Strauss and Candice Bergen.

Aisle Seat 2-6: Cinematographe, JENNIFER 8, Early Feb Rundown
Posted By Andy Dursin 2/5/2024 - 10:00 PM
Vinegar Syndrome has launched a new imprint, Cinematographe, whose first two releases impressively restore a pair of cult favorites – one of which has long been absent from home video. In fact, the last time LITTLE DARLINGS (94 mins., 1980, R) appeared on a legitimate format came via a Paramount VHS release with “some music” having been altered on the soundtrack. Those pricey song licenses, alas, were the reason this box-office hit from 1980 never made it to DVD or Blu-Ray, making this inaugural Cinematographe release a sensational restoration that preserves on both 4K UHD and Blu-Ray a highly entertaining coming-of-age picture with a sensational premise that’s sensitively handled.

The latest release from Intrada is a remastered reissue of one of Jerry Fielding's finest scores, THE NIGHTCOMERS, director Michael Winner's 1971 prequel to Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, most famously adapted in 1961 as The Innocents, starring Marlon Brando (!) as the brutish servant Quint.

The latest releases from Buysoundtrax and its affiliated labels include two from composer Joe Kraemer: THE JOE KRAEMER COLLECTION VOL. 1 (featuring The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting and Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead) and RELATIVE DIMENSIONS: 60 YEARS IN TIME AND SPACE (music for Doctor Who audio adventures); and CLIFFHANGERS, featuring Joe Harnell music from the short-lived 1979 TV series.

Aisle Seat 1-30: A Smashing CONAN 4K Double Bill
Posted By Andy Dursin 1/29/2024 - 10:00 PM
There’s nothing like receiving some eagerly-anticipated new releases during the depth of winter, titles to warm one’s movie-going soul, which Arrow has fulfilled this week with their big 4K UHD restorations of CONAN THE BARBARIAN and its 1984 sequel CONAN THE DESTROYER. Both films have been meticulously restored from their respective original negatives, in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR, contain all the soundtrack options (and isolated scores) you’d hope and are stacked to the gills with supplements, offering fans a spectacular new way to enjoy both John Milius’ 1982 classic and Richard Fleischer’s 1984 Saturday Matinee-styled, PG-rated follow-up.

Oscar Nominations 2023
Posted By Scott Bettencourt 1/24/2024 - 10:00 PM
This year’s Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, by Zazie Beets and Jack Quaid (demonstrating that Quaid truly is in everything these days), including the following music categories:

MUSIC (ORIGINAL SCORE)

AMERICAN FICTION - Laura Karpman
INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY - John Williams
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON - Robbie Robertson
OPPENHEIMER - Ludwig Göransson
POOR THINGS - Jerskin Fendrix

This is the first nomination for Fendrix, Karpman and Robertson. Karpman is still among the very few female composers nominated for their original scores, following winners Rachel Portman and Hildur Guonadottir and nominee Germaine Franco (Jackie nominee Mica Levi identifies as non-binary). Robertson passed away on August 9th of last year. His is not even the first posthumous original score nomination, as Victor Young (Around the World in 80 Days) and Alfred Newman (Airport) passed away before their final nominations. It is the third nomination for Göransson, and the 54th (!) for Williams. Göransson seems the likely winner, unless the Academy feels that Williams deserves a sixth one, especially since his last win was 30 years ago (for Schindler’s List). I believe I’m not the only Williams devotee who feels that Dial of Destiny is a less-than-classic Williams score, so I’m hoping sentiment does not win out (especially if that sentiment goes to Robertson). For the record, it’s his fourth nomination for an Indiana Jones score (only Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn’t make the cut).

MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG)

THE FIRE INSIDE - Flamin' Hot - Music and Lyric by Diane Warren
I'M JUST KEN - Barbie - Music and Lyric by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt
IT NEVER WENT AWAY - American Symphony - Music and Lyric by Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson
WAHZHAZHE (A SONG FOR MY PEOPLE) - Killers of the Flower Moon - Music and Lyric by Scott George
WHAT WAS I MADE FOR? - Barbie - Music and Lyric by Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell

If nothing else, this batch reminds one you should never bet against Diane Warren getting a nomination, no matter how obscure the film (raise your hand if you’ve seen Breakthrough, The Life Ahead, Four Good Days or Tell It Like a Woman). Barbie’s “What Was I Made For?” seems the most likely winner.

And now for those categories everyone else cares about:

Posted By Andy Dursin 1/21/2024 - 10:00 PM
A bona-fide ‘70s relic has been resurrected by Factory 25 for its premiere Blu-Ray release this month: the 1978 “youth picture” SKATEBOARD (98 mins., PG), an independently produced film from director George Gage that Universal picked up in the wake of “The Bad News Bears.”

Oscar Predictions and Other End Of 2023 Lists
Posted By Scott Bettencourt 1/19/2024 - 10:00 PM
Predictions are in boldface, followed by those which I personally would nominate in italics. As with previous years' lists, for several categories I have NOT provided my own nominations, since frankly I know jack about costumes, sound and so forth, though more and more I try to pay attention to sound in particular. Films that I have listed as my own personal nominations yet which will definitely not be nominated -- either because they are ultimately ineligible in those categories or simply not shortlisted -- are marked with an asterisk.

The actual nominations will be announced this Tuesday morning around 5:30 am (Pacific Time).

Film Score Friday 1/19/24
Posted By Scott Bettencourt 1/18/2024 - 10:00 PM
The latest CD from Intrada is an expanded and remastered edition of James Horner's score for the 1983 film version of Ray Bradbury's fantasy-horror classic SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, directed by Jack Clayton and starring Jason Robards, Jonathan Pryce and Pam Grier. Intrada released the earlier edition of Horner's score as well as Georges Delerue's unused score for the film.

Music Box has announced two new releases: the seventh volume in their series LES B.O. INTROUVABLES, featuring rare scores from French cinema, this one featuring scores by Jean Bouchety (Les furrieries de Scapin), Dominique Perrier & Sam Bernett (Le fou de roi), Karl-Heinz Schafter (Exterieur, Nuit; Polar), and Jean Musy (Les fausses confidences; Le coeur a l'envers; Le bahut va craquer); and ALEXEI AIGUI - FILM MUSIC COLLECTION, featuring cues from eight scores by the composer of the Oscar-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro.

BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, has announced their nominations for this year's film awards, including for Original Score:

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON - Robbie Robertson
OPPENHEIMER - Ludwig Göransson
POOR THINGS - Jerskin Fendrix
SALTBURN - Anthony Willis
SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE - Daniel Pemberton
