"Though dividing Collins’s final book into two movies created the problem of a slightly less than satisfying first half, it allowed Part 2 to be nearly all muscle, a frightening, relentless siege movie freighted with towering stakes. Lawrence and cinematographer Jo Willems, aided by James Newton Howard’s alternately piercing and rousing score, film all this struggle and death with a cruel, somber beauty, giving the film an aesthetic heft that the comparatively flat, slapdash Twilight movies never had. But the film doesn’t valorize its violence with all that lovely style. As our determined hero Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her compatriots storm the fascistic Capitol to overthrow the oppressive government of President Snow (Donald Sutherland), every loss and setback is felt, every tricky moral question given its due consideration. The 'Hunger Games' series is not big on subtlety, but still manages to weave complexity into its forward-marching plot, with Katniss weighing guilt against righteous anger, a yearning for peace against a craving for revenge. It’s heavy stuff that’s handled dexterously."

"Along the way to the president’s mansion, they must avoid a series of 'pods' -- think of them as high-tech IEDs -- scattered throughout the city. These obstacles provide the film’s few heart-pounding thrills. A wall of black ooze surges toward the rebel fighters, swallowing several of them whole in gnarly, ferocious fashion. But it’s the lizard mutt attack in the sewers that’s the film’s high point—or low point, if you want to get literal about it. Reptilian and ravenous, these fast-moving creatures are just devastating, and they add an element of paranoia and fear that the rest of the film desperately needed. (Seriously, I was curled up in a ball, watching this scene through my fingers. And James Newton Howard’s appropriately insistent score definitely ups the anxiety factor.)"
