Music Box has announced two new December soundtrack CD releases -- the first-ever release of Maurice Jarre's score for the 1988 TV mini-series THE MURDER OF MARY PHAGAN, starring Jack Lemmon and Peter Gallagher, based on the real-life tragedy which inspired such diverse works as Fritz Lang's Fury and the Broadway musical Parade; and Gabriel Yared's score for the 1984 fantasy NEMO (aka Dream One).

Varese Sarabande plans to announce their final CD Club release for the year next Monday.

The latest release from Kritzerland presents the soundtrack to director Busby Berkeley's 1943 movie musical THE GANG'S ALL HERE, featuring songs by Harry Warren and Leo Robin, music direction by Alfred Newman, and the music of Benny Goodman and his orchestra.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

99 HOMES - Antony Partos, Matteo Zingales

"But if '99 Homes' is a scolding look at a society gone astray, it is also a minor masterpiece of suspense, as tightly wound as 'Sicario,' Denis Villeneuve’s white-knuckle drug-war thriller, and almost as brutal. Not that there’s much in the way of physical violence: fists are raised now and then, and weapons are sometimes brandished. But the threat of destruction is pervasive, and everything -- the hand-held camerawork, the swift editing, the anxious music by Antony Partos and Matteo Zingales -- contributes to an overpowering sense of danger."

A.O. Scott, New York Times

"Its occasional heavy-handedness leaves the film open to accusations of melodrama, of course, and the film’s insistent score perhaps overemphasizes some of the emotional beats, but whatever niggles we have are forgivable because they all seem designed to make what is a very personal and passionate statement about system-sanctioned social injustice available and accessible and comprehensible to audiences beyond a niche arthouse crowd. Dedicated touchingly to Roger Ebert, '99 Homes' is by no means a perfect film, but it can achieve something more precious, and rarer than glossy perfection: it can take you by the shoulders and shake the apathy and complacency away. "

Jessica Kiang, IndieWire

"'99 Homes' pulses with energy from the very beginning. Bahrani is always keeping his camera moving, timed to an unsettling electronic-driven score. It is his most confidently made film. It doesn’t feel like there’s a beat, a shot, an angle that’s out of place or unconsidered. And yet that streamlined approach to filmmaking never corrupts Bahrani’s ability to capture the human condition, as he did so completely in films like 'Chop Shop' and 'Goodbye Solo.'"

Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

"'99 Homes' operates like a thriller (from its stunning opening one-take sequence), with elements of melodrama to heighten the stakes. (Some of the melodramatic elements don't work as well as the rest, relying, as they do, on coincidence, racing against the clock, etc; the reality is horrifying enough.) Held together with Antony Partos and Matteo Zingales' portentous original score, thrumming underneath almost every scene, '99 Homes' represents a shift for Bahrani. His other features have been small dramas, filmed accordingly: lots of hand-held camera work and a naturalistic approach. "99 Homes" has a strong look, a bold mood, with attention-getting shots like that opener, as well as a couple of aerial shots showing homes stretched out below. From that vantage point, homes look generic. To those on the ground, of course, it's a very different story."

Sheila O'Malley, RogerEbert.com

"'99 Homes' is a cripplingly utilitarian work, right from the opening scenes, when Nash learns that he won’t be paid for two weeks of construction, then hopelessly studies his foreclosure paperwork. Even Nash’s warm pre-motel home contrasts too easily with Carver’s personality-free McMansion. (Carver’s own wife, three daughters, and mistress barely register.) The film lacks the transcendent artistry of 'Chop Shop,' which depicted positive thinking verging on magical thinking in the brain of a young Latino carving a niche in the Queens auto-body row known 'The Iron Triangle.' And '99 Homes' never approaches the depths of empathy in 'Goodbye Solo,' about the bond forged between a down-home, rough old boy and a Senegalese cabbie in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As for lyricism -- there isn’t any. Bahrani keeps the images bright and functional while he amps up an electronic soundtrack that force-feeds you emotional cues. It’s as if he’s screwing in every piece of a pop-political fresco with a power drill."

Michael Sragow, Film Comment

"On the technical front, the throbbing percussion-and-electronica score by Anthony Partos and Matteo Zingales stands out as Bahrani’s most substantial miscalculation. Oddly dated and loudly present in nearly every scene, the music conveys bleak, urgent anxiety from the outset, leaving the film little room for tonal maneuvering. The sonic underlining also seems unnecessary with the actors already doing such a dexterous job of delivering Bahrani’s stinging, barely submerged subtext."

Guy Lodge, Variety

"Carrying a title that implicitly references the 99/1 percent divide so frequently used to describe what ails the country and much of the world, '99 Homes' passionately remonstrates against contemporary economic conditions that suggest that, in real life rather than Capraland, Lionel Barrymore's greedy old Mr. Potter in 'It's a Wonderful Life' actually has prevailed over humanity's better instincts. While 'At Any Price,' Ramin Bahrani's previous dramatic look at how tough things have become for so many working Americans, never found its audience, this, his sixth feature, might stand a better shot with the public since it's pointedly designed to make your blood boil. In this it succeeds, partly legitimately and to some degree via ramped-up melodrama and a notably manipulative musical score."

Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter
