DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

DIGGING FOR FIRE - Dan Romer

"'Digging For Fire' is a little moody and mysterious, but unlike the nightmarish aforementioned Kubrick marriage drama, it’s much more gentle and curious. It’s also a hazy movie, passing like a breeze on a balmy, boozy California evening, entrancing in the moment and then fleeting the next. Well shot by Ben Richardson, the contemplative atmosphere is perhaps most strongly rendered by composer Dan Romer ('Beasts Of The Southern Wild'). It’s a strange but memorable score and adds to the slightly surreal tone. Pillowy and synthy (unlike the folksy scores Romer is known for), it’s music that doesn’t always quite work in the moment, but something about the ambient swells being just left of center in any given scene certainly give the film an unusual flavor."

Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist

"Beautifully shot in 35mm by the gifted Ben Richardson ('Beasts of the Southern Wild') to a hypnotic synth score by Dan Romer, 'Digging for Fire' goes to the  tantalizing edge of revelation and leaves us there to filter what we saw through the prism of our own strengths and weaknesses. I'd call that the mark of a true filmmaker."

Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Meanwhile, composer Dan Romer’s original synths and an excellent selection of musical oddities make for a delightfully welcome score. At one point, [actor Jake] Johnson stomps around with the pistol to Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs’ 'Li’l Red Riding Hood' in a rich person’s white-washed living room, and it’s like we’ve suddenly stumbled back into Mia Wallace’s coked-out party den."

Amos Barshad, Grantland

"Joe Swanberg continues his march toward the mainstream even as he deepens his signature brand of hangout film in 'Digging for Fire,' a lovely slice of everything and nothing centered on a housesitting couple who discover possible evidence of a murder. There are feints toward a bona fide mystery plot, but that genre element is just a pretext for a stealth marital drama, held together through strong improv, tight editing (by Swanberg himself), moody cinematography and a synth score (from Dan Romer) that parties like it’s 1991. This is Swanberg’s starriest picture to date -- even if some appearances, like Jenny Slate’s, amount to glorified walk-ons -- making breakout success eminently possible."

Ben Kenigsberg, Variety

"Swanberg has made commendable efforts to make his films more movie-like -- here, Ben Richardson's cinematography and Dan Romer's score contribute substantially toward that end -- but he still relies on dialogue where he doesn't have to: Having DeWitt's character keep stumbling across the same self-help book about passionate marriages is a perfectly effective way of conveying things she nevertheless puts into words elsewhere."

John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

Z FOR ZACHARIAH - Heather McIntosh

"Luminously shot by Tim Orr (David Gordon Green’s longtime DP), 'Z For Zachariah' is beautiful to look at. The distinguishing high-contrast, almost Instagram-filter looks at the ravaged towns below the mountains, next to the warmer hue of the trio’s farm of salvation. And while the movie features an elegant score by Heather McIntosh, the music occasionally overplays its hand in a few crucial moments and sometimes even strains to push emotions that haven’t been earned yet."

Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist
