DID ANTHONY LANE MENTION THE MUSIC?

As I am only up to last August in my hunt for review quotes, and I have not found any score mentions in the most recent films I've been researching, and I am currently on vacation, here are some score review quotes from Anthony Lane's review collection Nobody Perfect, to remind us all that most critics don't mention the music unless they pan it:

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE - Elmer Bernstein

"It is Ellen, of course, who forces Archer to slow down and look deeper, and as the movie draws to a close even the camera is shamed into calm by the slow burn of regret -- tranquil, but intense for all that -- in the face of Daniel Day-Lewis. (What a pity that Elmer Bernstein's raucous score couldn't make the change, too.)"

Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

THE ENGLISH PATIENT - Gabriel Yared

"Together with the producer, Saul Zaentz, the composer, Gabriel Yared, and the director of photography, John Seale, he [writer-director Anthony Minghella] has made a clear and hard-edged epic, and the movie is splendidly unabashed by its old-style stirings toward adventure."

Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

THE FUGITIVE - James Newton Howard

"Despite the tight job that [director Andrew] Davis does on the movie, of a few of these cliches still leak in. Most damaging is the soundtrack, which was composed by James Newton Howard, and is evne more mindless than the one he wrote for 'The Prince of Tides.' It appears to be based on the principle that nothing is more scary than hitting a drum apart from hitting it harder; this reaches a lunatic level when Sam Gerard, the deputy United States marshal who is tracking Kimble, walks around the scene of the original crime. The music is so loud that we can barely hear ourselves think, so heaven knows what it must be like for him -- especially since he's played by Tommy Lee Jones, one of the few actors who can give a convincing impersonation of deep thought. Gerard wants his man, and nothing -- no dumb Chicago cops, no head-splitting composer -- is going to get in his way."

Anthony Lane, The New Yorker

GLADIATOR - Hans Zimmer, Lisa Gerrard

"'Gladiator,' like its hero, is aroused by everything that it knows to be corrupt; why else would the musical score (by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard) march so doomily in the foosteps of Mars from Holst's 'The Planets?'"

Anthony Lane, The New Yorker
