Intrada has announced two new CD releases for this week.

Director Michael Mann's 2004 hit COLLATERAL starred Tom Cruise (in a rare villain role) as a hit man who forces a a taxi driver (Jamie Foxx, earning a Supporting Actor nomination the same year he won Best Actor for Ray) to be his chauffuer for an all-night killing spree. The original score was composed by James Newton Howard, but in typical Michael Mann fashion, he took a mix-and-match approach to the music, using only a limited amount of Howard's contribution while tracking in cues from a variety of composers, including pieces from Mann's own earlier films like The Insider and Heat. The fllm's original soundtrack release on Hip-O featured only four relatively brief Howard cues (as well as two cues by Antonio Pinto), but the Intrada Collateral features nearly 53 minutes of Howard music.

Their other new release is a two-disc set presenting the score for director Otto Preminger's 1967 Georgia-set melodrama HURRY SUNDOWN, with an eclectic cast including Michael Caine, Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Diahann Carroll, Robert Hooks, George Kennedy, Burgess Meredith and Faye Dunaway. The film's score was composed by Hugo Montenegro (The Undefeated, The Ambushers), and RCA released 33 minutes of his music on LP at the time of the film's release. The Intrada release presents the complete 74-minute score, including music not heard in the final film, as well as 27 minutes of alternates and extras plus the original LP sequencing.

La-La Land has announced their planned schedule of releases for the rest of May.

On May 17th, they will release a CD pairing two scores for sci-fi apocalypses -- 1965's CRACK IN THE WORLD, starring Dana Andrews and Janette Scott (the Day of the Triffids star immortalized in a Rocky Horror lyric), scored by Johnny Douglas (The Railway Children); and Brian Gascoigne's score to PHASE IV, the 1974 thriller about super-intelligent ants that marked the feature directing debut of master title sequence designer Saul Bass (Waxworks released the Phase IV score for the first time on vinyl last year, but this is its first CD release). That same day they will release the score to the game UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF'S END, composed by A-list feature composer Henry Jackman.

On May 31, they will release an expanded, two-disc edition of one of Thomas Newman's most beloved scores, for the modern classic THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (which earned the composer his first Oscar nomination, competing against himself for his wonderful Little Women).

Varese Sarbande plans to announce their latest set of limited edition CD Club releases next Monday.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

MISTRESS AMERICA - Dean Wareham, Britta Phillips

"When Gerwig is in the frame, the film has an antic -- sometimes frantic -- screwball vibe, mellowed only by the terrific, Eighties-slanting synth score by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips. She can be a bit much, the chaos that corrals around her a bit cartoonish, and the filmmakers are savvy to that fact. "

Kimberley Jones, The Austin Chronicle

"Baumbach and Gerwig don't go all Preston Sturges all the time, however. The movie also features passages of mumblecore-non-sequitur dialogue, a synth-rock score (by Wareham and Britta Phillips) that could be flirting with a copyright-infringement lawsuit from New Order and a poster for Claude Chabrol's' Les Biches', recalling 'Frances Ha''s French new wave homages."

Mark Jenkins, NPR

"Influenced by ‘80s coming of age movies, 'Mistress America' also boasts a sublimely gauzy and pulsing synthesizer score by ex-Luna members Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips (they provided some music for 'The Squid In The Whale' and Wareham’s cameo is almost as funny as his brief turn in 'While We’re Young')."

Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist

"Brooke, when first seen, appears to lead a charmed life at the center of a traveling three-ring circus. A gleaming electropop score by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips gives you a sense of teetering on a merry-go-round. Brooke, 30, has a million grand schemes, of which the most urgent is her plan to open a restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with the backing of a Greek boyfriend, Stavros. This future eatery, Mom’s, is a combination bistro, hair salon, art gallery and homey retreat for the hipoisie. And while juggling to keep many balls in the air, she still has the time to lead a spin class."

Stephen Holden, New York Times

"'Mistress America' is so far Baumbach’s most vivacious output, fiercer in its convictions and sense of self than anything to come before. He treats it with equal affection for his past films, but is less protective -- it’s gassed with a smiling f***-you attitude, revved up by an ’80s Euro synth-pop score from husband-wife duo Dean Wareheim and Britta Phillips, who provided the music for Baumbach’s 'Squid and the Whale' in 2005, arguably his magnum opus."

Melissa Weller, Paste Magazine

"Baumbach makes great use of the many fun, lively actors he has cast, including Matthew Shear as Tracy's twitchy classmate and literary confidant, Tony, and Michael Chernus as Brooke's rich ex-boyfriend, Dylan, who still seems to find Brooke endearing, possibly because she's stuck in an adolescent phase of life that he misses, like that bag of weed he's trying to find. The whole movie also gets a fun, fizzy lift from its soundtrack, a synth-pop score by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips."

Rebecca Keegan, Los Angeles Times

"This is Baumbach and Gerwig’s third film together -- the first they’ve written together since 2012’s 'Frances Ha.' To quote Tracy to Tony: This new movie’s 'just the same in another direction' -- with much funnier dialogue and evocative electronic music by Wareham and Britta Phillips."

Wesley Morris, Grantland

"As with 'Frances Ha,' Baumbach and Gerwig made 'Mistress America' somewhat clandestinely, with a small crew and a leisurely post-production, and this looser way of working is once again reflected in the movie itself, which bristles with kinetic energy for the brief 84 minutes it’s onscreen. A decade on from composing duties on 'The Squid and the Whale,' the duo of Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips return here with a memorable original score steeped in ’80s-style New Wave synth pop."

Scott Foundas, Variety
