La-La Land has announced their current schedule of CD releases for July. On July 14, they will release the soundtrack to the science-fiction TV series HELIX, wth music by Reinhold Heil (co-composer of Run, Lola Run, One Hour Photo, Perfume and Cloud Atlas); a new edition of Richard Band's melodic orchestral score for the horror film THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW; and a re-release of their two-disc edition of James Horner's popular KRULL score. On July 28 they will release the soundtrack to MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION, with a score by Joe Kraemer (The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher), and Frederik Wiedmann's score for the direct-to-video animated feature JUSTICE LEAGUE: GODS AND MONSTERS, in which one can only assume the caped superheroes team up with director James Whale.
Intrada plans to announce two new CD releases next Monday.
Next Monday at 10 a.m., Varese Sarabande plans to announce yet another new CD Club release, as well as four new titles in their limited edition series of contemporary scores.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced their annual list of actors and filmmakers who are being invited to join their membership, and this year's whopping 322 prospective new members includes a large number of Music Branch invitees -- score composers Tyler Bates, Jonny Greenwood, Dave Grusin*, Alex Heffes, Johann Johannsson, Laura Karpman, Christopher Lennertz, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Marc Streitenfeld and Gary Yershon; songwriters Lonnie Lynn (aka Common), Sergio Mendes and John Stephens (aka John Legend); and music editors Alex Gibson, Lisa Jaime, Chris McGeary, Daniel Pinder and Erica Weis.
Among the cooler invitees are Bong Joon-Ho and Song Kang-ho, the director and star, respectively, of both Snowpiercer and The Host; director Edgar Wright; cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (Interstellar, Spectre); actors John Carroll Lynch, Denis O'Hare, J.K. Simmons (finally!), and Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (sadly, Rupert Graves is not on the list, keeping it from being a perfect Sherlock trifecta -- I guess this is a mystery DI Lestrade will have to solve by himself).
*Readers may wonder why it took so long for film music veteran Dave Grusin to be invited. Message Board member drivingmissdaisy plausibly suggests that Grusin was already a member but had let his membership lapse -- it would be hard to imagine that Grusin, who started scoring features five decades ago and has received one Oscar and eight nominations, had never been invited before.
Among the many talking heads featured in the just-released Saturday Night Live documentary LIVE FROM NEW YORK! is a somewhat unexpected figure -- Howard Shore. I know it shouldn't be a surprise to see Shore, considering that he was the music director and on-screen bandleader for the first five seasons of the series, but given the dominance of his work with Cronenberg, Jackson and Scorsese in the decades since, I tend to forget that he used to appear every week on one of TV's most popular series.
HAVE YOU A VALEDICTION, BOYO?
I don't know if I'm the only soundtrack collector with the First World Problem of not having enough time to listen to all the fantastic new soundtrack releases, but either way, it's rare that a new release makes it right to the top of my listening list (for example, right now I'm finally listening to David Arnold's terrific Shaft, which probably came out at least six months ago).
One of the few recent releases that qualified as a Must Play Now is La-La Land's spectacular three-disc set of John Williams' magnificent A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. Between this, their three-disc Star Trek -- The Motion Picture and their 15-disc Star Trek -- The Original Series, one would almost be tempted to say, "You've done enough, it can't get any better than this, you can close the company now," but of course I'd rather they stay open forever.
But while I'm acknowledging one of my favorite soundtrack labels, let me also mention my old friends at Intrada, especially their Monster Squad and their expanded versions of Alien, The Boys from Brazil, Flesh + Blood and The Great Train Robbery; the complete strangers at Varese Sarabande, particularly their Family Plot, The Final Conflict and The List of Adrian Messenger; and of course my FSM mentor Lukas Kendall, especially his Black Sunday, Body Heat, King Kong, the great Goldsmith trio of The Illustrated Man, Logan's Run and Tora! Tora! Tora, the Ron Jones Star Trek collection, and his spectacular first release, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. These are all CDs that made me feel like Melinda Dillon in Close Encounters, seeing Devil's Tower for the first time -- "I can't believe it's real!"

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
TRACERS - Lucas Vidal
"Screenwriter Matt Johnson does an adequate job, but the one thing worthy of note is how slowly -- and skillfully -- the violence in this film goes from shoves and punches to automatic weapons and barrages of bullets. The score, by Lucas Vidal, is a suitable mix of beats and notes to propel the action as well. 'Tracers' isn’t going to help [Taylor] Lautner leap to the A-List, but it’s an enjoyable journey to the middle."
James Rocchi, The Wrap
"Each gag is lamer and more tone deaf than the next (complete with a faux 'jazzy' score by David Holmes wannabe Alex Wurman), especially when contrasted with the next doom-and-gloom domestic crisis Vaughn is saddled with. (Which also includes his wife pushing him to enroll his son in private school, which he can't afford unless the deal closes)."
