DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

CHAPPIE - Hans Zimmer

"By the time 'Chappie' is over, it might remind you a bit too much of Blomkamp's earlier triumph. Like 'District 9,' this is a movie that is ostensibly aimed at young children (aliens! Robots!), but contains enough gushy ultra-violence to marginally squeak past with an R. It's a movie where a high concept is grafted to an occasionally uncomfortable level of realism and where, at the end, humanity is once again essentially doomed, giving way to something other. Still, between the charming Copley performance, the ingenious visuals, the absolutely incredible all-electronic Hans Zimmer score (seriously, this is one of his best ever), and the propulsive narrative thrust (Blomkamp is rarely singled out for how swiftly he moves things along, plot holes be damned), there is a lot to appreciate and even love about 'Chappie.' It just would have been nice to see Blomkamp stretch himself as an artist and not return to so many familiar tropes. Maybe he needs a reboot. "

Drew Taylor, The Playlist

"So that’s all pretty good, actually. And I’ll confess to being a sucker for Blomkamp’s brand of bombast. His action scenes are immediate and scary, Hans Zimmer’s score, all pulse and swell mixed with hints of Inception bwaaamp, doing some pretty effective indicating. I really like Blomkamp’s aesthetic, his keen sense of blending the real with the fantastical, the quiet moments of meaning with the rattle of annihilating violence. He’s a good director, he’s got visual and aural taste."

Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

THE LAZARUS EFFECT - Sarah Schachner

"All of this would be more forgivable if 'The Lazarus Effect' were remotely effective at putting viewers on edge. But director David Gelb -- whose previous feature, 'Jiro Dreams Of Sushi,' gets a culinary callback -- makes an awkward transition from point-and-shoot documentary filmmaking to the higher demands of horror helming. His tactics are tired and very PG-13: A rubber ball bounces ominously into a room, flashes of burning dolls tease a horrific backstory, and every third jolt is a fake out. Gelb also badly telegraphs his jump scares, conspicuously dipping the volume when a 'shocking' blare of music is imminent and holding on shots for so long that the only possible outcome is something spooky appearing suddenly in frame. Like too many horror films, this one seems targeted at a hypothetical audience using only 10 percent of its brainpower."

Something cool I read this morning. From Billboard:

'Jurassic Park' Theme Hits No. 1 for First Time

Twenty-two years after its arrival, John Williams' "Jurassic Park Theme," originally released (as a now-essentially extinct cassette and CD single) accompanying the 1993 blockbuster, has become a No. 1 hit on a Billboard chart, taking a 6-1 bite out of the June 27 Classical Digital Songs survey. It leaps to the top with a 205 percent gain to 3,000 sold in the week ending June 14, according to Nielsen Music. The sweeping instrumental has sold 189,000 downloads to-date.
