Intrada announced three CD releases this week -- the first-ever release of David Newman's score to the time travel comedy hit BILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE (Intrada released Newman's score for the sequel, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, in 2007); the first CD release of Pino Donaggio's score for the 1986 horror film CRAWLSPACE, starring Klaus Kinski and directed by David Schmoeller (Tourist Trap, The Seduction), and featuring the same cues as the original Varese LP; and a re-release of a two-disc Les Baxter set that had sold out rapidly, pairing the Jules Verne adaptation MASTER OF THE WORLD and the sword-and-sandals adventure GOLIATH AND THE BARBARIANS.

Music Box has announced two new CDs -- a CD pairing two scores for the 1976 Dean Koontz adaptation LES PASSAGERS (THE INTRUDER), the unused score by Eric Demarsan and the replacement score by Claude Bolling; and the first CD release of Piero Piccioni's score for the 1978 death penalty drama LE TEMOIN.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 271 actors, executives, publicists and filmmakers who are being invited to join the Academy, including the following Music Branch invitees -- composers Stanley Clarke, Steve Jablonsky Steven Price, Buck Sanders and Charles Strouse; songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez, Tony Renis, Eddie Vedder and Pharrell Williams; and music editors Earl Ghaffari and Angie Rubin.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 - John Powell

"Still, the movie's visual scope is magnificent, both in the photorealistic rendering of fire, water, and translucent green ice (maestro cinematographer Roger Deakins once again served as a consultant) and in the subtle, moving character design of Toothless, a descendant of Hayao Miyazaki's beloved Totoro mixed with a big black cat. Composer John Powell's offbeat score is spiked with a zesty new song by erstwhile Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi, lending throttle to a kinetic early scene set high in the sky. The flight path needs straightening, but this is still a franchise that knows how to fly."

Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly

"There’s no gainsaying the film’s technical achievement. The painstaking attention to detail extends from the design of the beasties and people (neatly splitting the difference between the more cartoony figures of the first film and a more photorealistic look that’s popular these days), to John Powell’s rousingly folksy, drum-lead score, to the way light falls just so in every frame, thanks in part to consultation from ace cinematographer Roger Deakins. Through sheer budget firepower alone it should roar its way through the world’s box offices this summer, although the family audience can be a fickle mistress and the competition is stiff this year."

Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter

THE MOMENT - Nathan Larson

"The story itself is fairly straightforward, but lands with a thud. Weinstock and co-writer Gloria Norris chop up their uninteresting story with flashbacks inside flashbacks inside psychotic episodes. You don’t ever really know what’s going on, but at least the heavy-handed music tells you what to feel."

Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

"When the film begins, Lee is desperately trying to make contact with a sullen ex-lover named John (Martin Henderson, who doesn’t seem to have aged a day since 'The Ring'). John has gone missing, and the ominous music that plays as Lee searches his house suggests he isn’t going to be found anytime soon; there’s 'absent,' and then there’s 'maggots crawling over the chicken wings that were left on the kitchen table.' 'The Moment' recklessly cuts between her relationship with John and her relationship with Peter, two men differentiated only by their scowl and an arm tattoo that is introduced as a distinguishing mark, then almost never seen onscreen again. The resulting confusion, which is in distinct contrast to the film’s irritatingly instructive score, may be intended to help convey Lee’s deepening psychosis, but the tactic doesn’t reveal the instability of her reality so much as it exposes the artifice of her predicament. "

David Ehrlich, The Dissolve

"Throughout, and with the exception of a few seconds of silence during Lee's sessions with a therapist played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, every scene has been incessantly set to the most canned music imaginable. And as if the hackneyed gratuitousness of it all weren't offensive enough, the script appropriates signs of seriousness -- Africa, photography, the shrink's British accent -- in a seemingly desperate attempt to forge some kind of gravitas to an otherwise vacuous exercise in genre emulation."

Diego Costa, Slant Magazine

THINK LIKE A MAN TOO - Christopher Lennertz

"Since the principals are stuck with all the tedious plotting and exposition, it gives ample opportunities for the second bananas to steal scene after scene, whether it's Wendi McClendon-Covey as a buttoned-up housewife who gets a hot-tomato makeover or Dennis Haysbert as Candace's Uncle Eddie, who provides a suave distraction for Miss Loretta, complete with hilarious slow-jam accompaniment (from scorer Christopher Lennertz)."

Alonso Duralde, The Wrap

"There's also an amusing side story of Michael's good Christian mother getting wooed by Dennis Haysbert, each of his baritone utterances accompanied by smooth quietstorm jazz licks."

Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

THIRD PERSON - Dario Marianelli

"It’s all pretty silly, yes, but despite the eye-rolls, there’s still something captivating about both films’ strenuously arty insistence. 'Third Person,' which owes a lot to Dario Marianelli’s wistful, omnipresent score and Gianfilippo Corticelli’s chilly, elegant photography, didn’t envelop me in the same melancholic spell as 'Breaking and Entering.' You can see the big twist/reveal from a mile away and there’s some seriously clunky writing. ('White. The color of honesty,'  Michael writes at one point. Take back that Pulitzer!) And yet, something resonated anyway, sending me out of the theater still swaddled in its gauzy haze. I blame Rome."

Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

"If the film didn't take its own intended profundity so seriously, it might get a pass. But the numbing tastefulness of Dario Marianelli's score combined with the dour and desperate faces the script demands of the cast 90 percent of the time just demonstrate that 'Third Person' has no intention of admitting how ridiculous it all really is, making this movie a puzzle that was better left unsolved."

Ian Buckwalter,  NPR

"If done well, any of these could have sufficed for its own 137-minute film; in its crazed dash to crisscross these seemingly unrelated strands, Haggis's filmmaking betrays its own dreary blandness as if on repeat. A housekeeper at a posh hotel, Julia scribbles the time/place details for her next meeting with Theresa on a scrap of paper and then leaves it in one of the rooms; as she panics in realization, Haggis smash-cuts back to Michael's suite in Paris. His character is framed in the same medium close-up (wistfully smoking cigarettes while pounding on his MacBook) over and over again, and Dario Marianelli's score makes sure to accordion-flutter whenever Atias's character shows a little leg."

Steve Macfarlane, Slant Magazine

"Such self-consciousness isn’t lost on Haggis, whose take on the Charlie Kaufman-esque meta-movie forgoes sardonic detachment in favor of the far riskier gambit: sincere emotion. It’s a bold approach, far easier to ridicule, but also much more open to identification, making this an extremely rich text to interpret, mirrored musically by Dario Marinelli’s piano-strong score."

Peter Debruge, Variety
