The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (1964-68) was television's first major spy show, an hour of high-style adventure starring Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, resourceful agents of a worldwide peacekeeping organization. Their battles with the international criminal conspiracy Thrush, and other assorted bad guys, kept audiences enthralled for four seasons on NBC.

The music of U.N.C.L.E.—including a theme, pilot score and two additional episode scores by Jerry Goldsmith—was enormously popular, both in the show and on records. Hugo Montenegro's two RCA compilations featured pop arrangements of several first- and second-season themes and scores, but the original soundtracks have never before been available.

Now, the best of all four seasons of U.N.C.L.E. music (over two and a half hours!) has been assembled into a 2CD set. In addition to suites drawn from the three first-season Goldsmith scores, the album includes music by Lalo Schifrin, Morton Stevens, Walter Scharf, Gerald Fried, Robert Drasnin and Richard Shores. The music is newly remastered from the original monaural session tapes, with fourth-season music remixed in stereo. Veteran film-music journalist Jon Burlingame, who has written extensively about the series through the years, chronicles the entire history of U.N.C.L.E. music in a lavishly illustrated 28-page booklet.

This is Film Score Monthly's most elaborate production to date, a long-awaited collection of exciting original tracks from a fondly remembered '60s classic. This limited-edition release is sure to be a sought-after collector's item for U.N.C.L.E. fans, Goldsmith aficionados and anyone interested in great TV music!

Gerald Fried Scores on FSM
About the Composer

Gerald Fried (b. 1928) contributed scores to some of the most famous 1960s TV series including Star Trek ("Amok Time"), Gilligan's Island, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Lost in Space. His career began in the 1950s with several features for his Bronx friend Stanley Kubrick (The Killing, Paths of Glory) and has also encompassed classic '50s horror like The Return of Dracula and, into the '70s and '80s, landmark longform television such as Roots. His scores are distinguished by his distinctive rhythms and also colorful writing for woodwinds (he is an oboe player).

Jerry Goldsmith Scores on FSM
About the Composer

What to say about Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004), the reason so many of us are soundtrack collectors in the first place? The Los Angeles native knew early on he wanted to write music for the movies, had an extensive training in television in the 1950s (starting at CBS), and went on to an unparalleled career in the movies—capable of brilliance in every genre, and beloved by his peers and fans. FSM has released as many of his scores as we could get our hands on, from classic TV work like The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to famous features (Patton) and obscure gems like The Illustrated Man and 100 Rifles...heck, make that all of them. Jerry, we love you and miss you! IMDB

Morton Stevens Scores on FSM
About the Composer

Morton Stevens (1929-1991) was a veteran film and primarily television composer who wrote the famous theme to Hawaii Five-0 and contributed episode scores to all manner of classic shows, including Thriller and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. He was a friend of Jerry Goldsmith's and had a similarly modern orchestral style on many projects; he completed the scoring of the miniseries Masada when Goldsmith was unavailable. In addition to his work as a composer, Stevens was head of music at CBS' West Coast operations (a lengthy stint that began in 1965) during which time he oversaw the scoring of many notable series. IMDB

About the Composer

Greek composer Various is best known for his synthesizer scores...no, we are kidding. This is a placeholder we use for collections representing more than two composers. Although it would be fun to write "Various's" bio; he's had quite a career.
