Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition release – two world premiere scores on one CD and classic Jerry Lewis double bill:

VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET

Composed and Conducted by Leigh Harline

and

THE DELICATE DELINQUENT

Composed and Conducted by Buddy Bregman

It’s hard to imagine just how popular Martin and Lewis were back in the day, but they were as big as it got, in both personal appearances and all their films together. But it all ended in 1956 with the pair’s final film for Paramount, Hollywood or Bust. Lewis stayed at Paramount and began making solo pictures. Within a short time, he became Paramount’s biggest star.

Visit to a Small Planet began life as a television play by Gore Vidal and then Vidal adapted it for the Broadway stage. The play was a hit, and Paramount bought the rights, turning it into a vehicle that was specifically tailored to Jerry Lewis and jettisoning a good deal of the Vidal play in the process. Appearing alongside Lewis was a terrific supporting cast, including Fred Clark, John Williams, Joan Blackman, Gale Gordon and Earl Holliman.

Visit to a Small Planet was yet another solo hit for Lewis. Aiding Lewis immeasurably in his hijinks is the delightful score by Leigh Harline. Harline’s score for Visit to a Small Planet is a treasure, beginning with a melodic seven-note main theme that is impossible to get out of one’s head once it’s been heard. Harline makes liberal use of the Theremin and keeps the comedy in the film plowing forward with his clever and infectious musical hijinks. There are a few nice source music cues, too, and the whole thing adds up to an entertaining and buoyant score.

The Delicate Delinquent was originally meant to be the Martin and Lewis follow-up to Hollywood or Bust, but when the partnership went bust the film was quickly retooled as a solo vehicle for Lewis, with the Martin role going to actor Darren McGavin. The scoring assignment fell to someone relatively new to film composition, a young wunderkind named Buddy Bregman. Bregman’s score for The Delicate Delinquent is an undiscovered gem. His themes are tuneful and his scoring expert. The score starts out with a bang with the exciting main title – all bongos and drums and percussion until the dynamic orchestra enters with its propulsive rhythms and its jazzy pyrotechnics. There follows a lovely, bluesy theme for saxophone and orchestra and that’s followed by the main theme, a truly beautiful melody that will appear throughout the score, along with more of the big-band, jazzier stuff. Bregman never plays up the comedy – it’s a straightforward score and it’s one of the reasons the film holds up well today.
This is the world premiere release of both scores, taken from tapes housed in the Paramount vaults. These two scores in particular are very different from each other, but each is perfect for the film it’s underscoring, and both are delightful to listen to on their own.

Visit to a Small Planet/The Delicate Delinquent is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship the second week of December, but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Very exciting news !

smile

Clips sound great, so I guess real tracks will sound wonderful !

Did you add a little reverb on THE DELICATE DELINQUANT ? : it sounds like a nice cosy-mono...

No verb added to either - they didn't need it smile

And I'm also happy to say, CDs will be in later today (Monday) and can ship tomorrow.

Gobbled this up with the Special deal including GEISHA BOY!

A Great Jerry Lewis Triple!

VISIT sounds like a mix of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and Arthur B. Rubinstein's LOST IN AMERICA! Love that score.

Does anyone know how many Soundtracks were ever released for Jerry Lewis films and what they are?

I can think of:

SLAPSTICK
CINDERFELLA

Be nice to have a Jerry L. scores collection.

Anyone?

Think I'll start a new thread on JERRY LEWIS Soundtracks.

GREAT RELEASE AS ALWAYS BRUCE!! AWESOME! AND THANKS!

I will also wait to order since that's the only pre-1975 release this month it seems, but at least there is one.

That made me think that there are a lot of unreleased Hairline from 1955-1960, so I guess more will be coming!

Ordered immediately. Particularly looking forward to the Delinquent score.

Small request... When we're lucky enough to have a nice, individual cover provided for both films, please let's not put a tag for one score on the cover of the other. When it comes to putting the two scores separately into iTunes or whatever, the covers work better as stand-alones.

We're occasionally asked to do it by the studio.

Hoorah! Happily ordered - love "The Geisha Boy" album (not that it's directly related, but it's another recent Jerry Lewis album...), love Harline, and really looking forward to hearing the Bregman in full!

I should also note that this album, in a way, marks the Kritzerland debut of label (and personal) favorite Johnny Mandel (here credited as John) - who contributed the "Hungry Brain" cues. Here's hoping this is but the prologue for many Mandels to come from the Land of Kritzer!

If this shipped on Monday as planned, it's time to be working out what's next.
Time for a western I'd say.

Kritzerland said: And I'm also happy to say, CDs will be in later today (Monday) and can ship tomorrow.

So, has anyone received their CD yet and care to comment? Or can anyone confirm that these have shipped?

SAE still has this on preorder.

I received mine a couple of days ago and have been thoroughly enjoying both scores.
Re: VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET, although all the Harline cues are great, the one that really grabbed my ear is the cool jazz cue "Slow Bus To Memphis" by Victor Young.
Bruce, do you know if that cue was originally composed for another film (and maybe which one)?
Or is it a library source cue? How about the Mandel pieces?

And one last question: do you know who is the scat singer on "Desdemona's Lament"?

Great release.

So now it's time for clues to the next one. I may have lost track, but isn't there another Bernstein coming soon?
