Alias Bob Newhart's receptionist or the second Mrs. Ned Flanders, depending on your point of view, Marcia Wallace passed away yesterday.

Very sad news. "The Bob Newhart Show" is my favorite 1970s comedy, and Marcia Wallace was superb in it. Her comic timing was outstanding. RIP.

Sad news indeed. Loved her on the Bob Newhart Show as well as Edna Krabapple on The Simpsons. She also was a semi-regular on the Match Game.

So, will they write out Mrs. K on The Simpsons now, like they did with Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure after Phil Hartman was killed?

Yes, they've stated they'll retire her character.

Really sorry to hear this. I stopped watching Simpsons a long time ago, but recently got caught up with her early work on Bob Newhart on MeTV.

Marcia Wallace was the perfect comic foil/ wisecracking secretary to Bob Newhart on his show - a really talented comedienne! But she will live long in rerun heaven. RIP Marcia-

Poor Neddy Flanders doesn't have much luck with wives does he?

I on,y knew Wallace through her voice work in The Simpsons, but what great works she did there. Edna K was just such a wonderful character.

RIP x

This would be a perfect chance to mature Bart's character and give Krabappel a good send off, too.

She wouldn't even need to speak, if written properly.

Bart once again fudges and assignment and doesn't try, all she can do is a facepalm. Next scene: Bart is leavign the classroom late and Millhouse asks what happened, and Krabappel has given Bart a second chance but it better be good or he fails.

He blows off the second chance until a few days later Krabappel isn't in class and they are told she's passed. Bart then remembers all the times he's had with her, and how she consuled him that one time he really, really tried early on in the show. He decides to actually do his assignment, do it the best he can, for her.

And since shows like this like to parody other shows and movies, Bart can pull getting on his desk and saying, "Teacher, my teacher!" and read it. Long after class has ended and everybody has left, he'll still be sitting on the desk, contemplating, much like Homer on the back of his car after his mother left in her first appearence. The same score cue can be played, since it's sad anyway, so it can be a "like father, like son" moment.

The score cue:
