FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS---Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS) are developing movie remakes of the classic Universal Monsters. Orci said they're thinking about creating a common universe for the Universal Monsters similar to the one created by Marvel Studios, "There's an interesting thing that could happen at Universal where they have this amazing library of their old monsters and these kinds of heroes, and the idea of trying to create a universe. VAN HELSING, and we're also producing THE MUMMY for them. We're kind of imagining updating these kinds of things. You don't want to just make remakes when you're doing a thing, unless it's worthy of being a remake, but when you have an idea for something that can actually be made different and yet be true to what it was. We just had a notion of how to make it modern and have a slightly different tone. It's not going to be just a remake." The VAN HELSING remake stars Tom Cruise.

THE COUNSELOR---photo released from the Ridley Scott movie shows Cameron Diaz as the sociopathic girlfriend of a mobster (Javier Bardem) who exposes herself to him while on top of his car. Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Penelope Cruz also star.

BEAST OF THE BERING SEA---Syfy movie about a sister and brother who are scuba diving in search of gold in an undersea cave when they discover a colony of amphibious vampire creatures. Cassie Scerbo (SHARKNADO), Jonathan Lipnicki (JERRY MAGUIRE) and Kevin Dobson (KOJAK, KNOT'S LANDING ) star. Premiere is November 9.
Another Syfy movie is STONADOS in which a freak weather system hurls killer boulders. Paul Johansson (ONE TREE HILL) and William B. Davis (THE X-FILES) star. Premiere is November 23.

THE INTRUDERS---BBC America eight-part miniseries underway based on the novel about an ex-Los Angeles police detective who is searching for his missing wife and discovers "... a secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others." The script is by Glen Morgan (THE X-FILES).

THE LOST CITY---Warner Bros. movie underway about the mythical undersea city of Atlantis with a script by Jonas Cuaron (GRAVITY).

KICKBACK---the BLADE RUNNER duo of Rutger Hauer and Sean Young have joined the cast of John Cusack, Sean Astin, Mischa Barton, Michael Biehn and Tom Sizemore in this movie about a Moscow police detective investigating the murder of a female war correspondent.

GAME OF THRONES---British actor Struan Rodgers will play Lord Brynden Rivers/Bloodraven, the human form of Three-Eyed Raven.

HIEROGLYPH---Fox ordered 13 episodes of this adventure series set in ancient Egypt in which "a notorious thief who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharoah, navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers."

FRANKLIN AND BASH---TNT renewed the series for Season 4.

Oh boy, indeed! With these two writers attached, this sounds like the worst thing to happen to the Universal Monsters since "The Munsters" in 1964. Didn't that terrible VAN HELSING movie teach Universal anything? And what's this about a remake of VAN HELSING starring Tom Cruise?!!! That's gotta be a joke, right? Talk about a horror show!

Boy, Fritz needs to be sent out again in seach of some brains for transplanting. What he could dig up couldn't be any worse than what these people at Universal are already working with.

Van Helsing was awesome. Nothing spectacular, but an entertaining adventure with a sense of good old fashioned fun that's missing from a lot of movies these days. I loved that it didn't just mindlessly throw the monsters together just for the sake of it, but that the story was actually creative and had a reason for why they should all be in the same movie. It was a financial success, too, so I'm not sure why Universal never pursued a sequel. (I know there was talk of a direct-to-video sequel with Julian McMahon replacing Hugh Jackman, which would have been terrible.)

I think it is a good idea to give another shot at these classic creatures. For the fans, if you don't try you can't come up with a new winner. If it fails, so be it. It is the same old silly story from the viewers, don't remake this don't remake this. It's all just an opinion anyway. Did I enjoy VAN HELSING as much as the Universal, Hammer films? To be honest no. Did I think VAN HELSING was a good film? To be honest yes.Maybe the next Universal monster film will be great , maybe not. so what.

When it comes to the Hugh Jackman film Van Helsing, I consider it a good film that unfortunately got bad special effects. If that movie had better special effects it would not have got as bad reputation as it got. If you look at the movie without thinking of the terrible special effects you got a pretty good movie after all.

There are some other cases when a movie got really great special effects but beyond that it is not a good movie at all but that is another thing.
