so PET SEMATARY is the surprise release (1980s modern classic) hinted about a few days ago, right? Hinted? It's been already announced by MV in another thread. Probably you've missed it.
Great news, a score I got very early on and have always enjoyed. I found the movie on vhs in a flea market (looking for anything Stephen King) and the movie creeped me out tons. The Zelda character remains one of the most disturbing images ever and the demise of Fred Gwynne one of the most terrifying sequences ever! Goldenthal's strings are so maniacally evil during those moments it hasn't lost any of its impact. The lovely waltz for the family, the mysterious and haunting music for the trip to the micmac burial ground and the exciting suspense music for Rachel's trip home, aside from the scary stuff there are so many great ideas and sounds that really elevate Pet Sematary to a classic horror movie; I've since upgraded my vhs to dvd and have yet to get the blu-ray but look forward to it as it's a movie that holds up very well. I'm glad I get to upgrade the Varese, when I asked Goldenthal about it in Krakow he said that he wasn't satisfied with the sound on the Varese as well as the cover artwork, I'm sure this La-La Land release will do it justice!

I've had the Varese CD for ages, but rarely listen to it. It just creeps me out too much.
I don't like to admit it but yeah the score does creep me out (as does the film) that's why I'm a little hesitant about purchasing it, Eventhough I've never own the original Varese album. However I do want to add more Goldenthal scores to my collection. I guess I'll wait for feedback before making a decision on rather to purchase this or not.

I saw it mentioned in the LaLaNews thread, but I didnt see it explicitly described as the "surprise" release. I posted my question there, but seemed to get buried immediately. Sounds good to me. I always thought the song was at odds with the mood set up by the score. Can't wait to hear new Goldenthal! Was there anything that wasn't used in the film?

Ack! My bank account! I've never been a huge fan of this score, mainly because I find the audio quality on the Varese release severely lacking, but I splurge for anything Goldenthal.
Great to see more expanded Goldenthal, I think it is only his second score getting an expanded release (the other being LLL's Batman Forever).
As he seems to have been involved in this release I wonder why he would be preventing the release of the complete version of his (IMO) masterpiece "Alien 3" (I think MV mentioned in another thread that the main difficulty with that release is the composer being alive). I just hope MV can convice him to allow a complete Alien 3 in the near future!
