Stumbled over this. No idea what it is or who the composer is or anything. Some of the music is very good. It has that open orchestral old school writing (and recording) that characterised late 70s and early 80s soundtracks like Secret of NIHM, Heavy Metal and some Brian May scores.

The musicianship is of a VERY high order indeed, and it's obviously a major concert event.

It's extremely long (haven't watched all of it), and quite lot of it is not my cup of tea (a bit schmaltzy sometimes). But here are a few moments I skipped to and found admirable:

05.00 - 06.20.
12.00 - 14.00
1.08.40 - 1.09.20
1.43.22 - 1.46.05

So, any ideas as to what it's all about?

What is this, someone who is not acquainted with one of Japan's greatest composer?

The composer is the one and only incredible Joe Hisaishi performing his film score works. I haven't looked through the entire video yet, but those opening film clips are from NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1984) -- a good film in its own right and worth checking out.

EDIT: Beat me to it, Maleficio. wink

All the music is from the Studio Ghibli films he worked on up until the date of the concert.

Thanks chaps. Nice to have my horizons broadened - I fear that I live in a bubble sometimes. big grin

Can you recommend any other works by this composer?

My personal favorite of Hisaishi's is Princess Mononoke, but I'm sure others better versed in his works can give you many more recommendations.

Well that depends on what sort of music you like?

Hisaishi has done it all but he is famous for his very melodic, or "schmaltzy," film scores.

That's why I like his music.
