Hello Ladies and Gents.

I'm looking for obscure superhero scores with strong, memorable themes that also have a good sense of humor to them. I thought i would pick the brains of the Film score monthly crew.

Good request; I myself don't watch most of the new superhero ones because they are generally too overbearing.

That said, try The Shadow (1994) by Jerry Goldsmith. While the film has become sort of a cult affair with those who love it and who hate it, I think the score itself is generally admired by those who are familiar with it (Intrada has a 2-disc version out now). The film has rather dark tones and themes on the surface, but it knows and respects (playfully) its pulpy source material, drawn from both the magazines and radio plays, and never strays too far from its matinee fare offering of upbeat fun. I think the music reflects this.

If you want truly obscure and downright absolutely ridiculously campy, though, try The Return of Captain Invincible (1983). Not so much a score with themes (strong or otherwise...) as a musical with three absurd songs written by Richard Hartley and Richard O'Brien (better known for Rocky Horror). As for finding the music on disc or vinyl...

Hope that helps some.

On a similar note, I think David Newman's The Phantom would be a good recommendation as well.

From the more recent batch of superhero films, not much to recommend except Alan Silvestri's Captain America, a throwback-type score with a big, bold, fun orchestral sound and a great theme.

How about Mancini's CONDORMAN?

Several episodes of SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES have a semi-comic slant. Of course, music from that series is not available to purchase ... yet. smile

Batman and Robin - Elliot Goldenthal
Batman Subzero: - Michael McCuistion. not exactly jolly but not heavy handed either.

Not an especially obscure superhero, but not a composer much lauded around these parts: Craig Armstrong's The Incredible Hulk has strong themes and his "Hulk" theme itself is a very entertaining morsel.
