The Dallas Wind Symphony is performing selections from several film scores in their next two concerts.
The first concert (tomorrow night) includes selections from Alien E.T. Close Encounters Independence Day.
Other Oscar-winning scores will be highlighted in the November concert: The Wizard of Oz The Red Violin Chaconne Oklahoma! Colonel Bogey March from The Bridge on the River Kwai Overture to Captain Blood

Additionally, the huge organ at the Meyerson Concert Center will be used with the Strauss piece associated with 2001: A Space Odyssey (Also Sprach Zarathustra), and perhaps elsewhere in the concert.
This is going to be a fairly full concert, because there are three classical pieces (including "Mars" from Holst's Planets) also on the program.

I write this just having had the rare pleasure of attending this concert in Dallas. The Wind Symphony brings us awesomeness every year but this rose above. Mostly because we were afforded that rarest of things, hearing Jerry Goldsmith's score brought to life in a room.
Just as with the Close Encounters arrangement earlier, what we heard dallied with the dissonance and the gigantic sonic palate available, boisterously teased us with the turbulent depths in play, then quickly resolved to sounds that an elderly lady with a clutch purse could comment upon approvingly, on the way to the car. But Lordy... What she and I and the rest of us heard in that room!
It was thrilling. And yes, I shall say when I am looking back, I heard a live orchestra play "Alien" ... And not just half ass it, but kill it.
Oh, how I wish this concert was recorded and released on CD! The DWs is an incredible group. The Ron Nelson "Holidays and Epiphanies" cd is one of the best wind ensemble releases ever.
If patrons support these concerts, perhaps we'll get more film music.
It is also interesting that the Wind Symphony has mentioned the possibility of recording a CD of music by John Williams. In his younger days, John Williams worked in the Air Force Band. So it was fitting that Williams recently provided special arrangements of his music for the U.S. Marine Band. Such arrangements, for wind band, are very appealing to an ensemble such as the Dallas Wind Symphony. Film music fans should encourage these endeavors.
