I've resurrected this because I finally saw "Star Trek:Into Darkness" yesterday with Benjamin Cumberbatch as a young Richardo Montalban, and feel that it was poor casting -- does anyone believe that he'll grow up to have the charisma of Montalban as the same character in "Star Trek:The Wrath of Khan"? And while I don't blame Cumberbatch for the lack of fire in the newest "Star Trek," his chilly demeanor certainly doesn't help.
And, incidentally, to Jim Phelps, my own complaint about Cumberbatch has little to do with how handsome he is or isn't or, for that matter, about charisma. I wrote about him in this thread because (1) he simply doesn't strike me as the sexiest man alive and (2) I don't believe he could grow up to be the fierce Richardo Montalban in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn." Even Stephen Van Dorn, who sings in most of those videos that sheetmusicman posted and which caused such a stir yesterday when I (temporarily) brought them to the top of the pile is FAR more sexy that Benedict Cumberbatch!

TO ADO- I agree with your statement about how silly and immature the media and the public can be with these things. When I first saw this dude , I said he looks just like one of my cousins. But my cousin is better looking and my cousin is not that great a looker. A media that builds on the suckers in this world.
People complain about the way the media pushes cookie cutter good looks of so many pretty boys and girls but then the moment someone not conventionally handsome or beautiful comes to the fore, you all become jaded reactionaries. The staus quo thanks you.
I think that there are many examples of non conventionally attractive men and women. I would not say that there is anything particularly non-conventional or odd looking about Cumberbatch, merely that is not the most handsome looking, any more than the average guy in grocery store or on the city bus.
You are making an assumption about non-conventionally handsome without saying plainly with some harshness but truth - that the world is full of people that are just average, neither conventionally nor unconventionally handsome. Just because you are not fitting into the Brad Pitt George Clooney model of handsome male does not mean that you can reassure yourself that you are 'unconventionally handsome". That is certainly a sweet sounding lie that we would all like to tell ourselves.
I think that Cumberbatch is really average, he looks like a guy that might deliver the mail or be walking his dog in the park, he is neither ugly, nor handsome. You miss the point though that the media does push celebrityhood, you cannot merely be an actor, you have to be a sex symbol, and if you can be a pop star too, all the better, intriguing personal life - even better!

I just LOVE Scarlett Johansson, and it has nothing to do with physical attraction. At times she seems to have an almost Meryl Streep ability to disappear in her roles -- she's just the opposite of the sort of look-at-me-I'm-so-and-so "movie stars" who undeservedly get too many of the juiciest roles. There are times that it takes me a while to even realize who I'm watching. Just love her.

Let's just say that we disagree on who is considered attractive--probably unconventionally and otherwise.  You also extrapolated what I define as unconventionally attractive by using your opinion of Cumberbatch's looks and perhaps anyone else I might consider in that category by calling it a "sweet sounding lie" in order to make a broader statement, to say nothing of putting words in my mouth regarding my "assumption" about those who aren't "universally" attractive.
