Also close by is SOMMERSBY. These two feature sad and drop dead beautiful melodies and colorful orchestrations.(I have never heard music convey the nuance of horse in musical terms and here these are very distinct) We all took a second glance when we heard it the first time around as it was a clear departure from Elfman's BATMAN/DARKMAN styles. For those who never purchased it or never even heard it should get this right away as a blind purchase. You will be thankful that you did. The original cd went OOP pretty early and it was great to LLL have it back in print and expanded with lovely notes, packaging and bonus tracks. Black Beauty, on the other hand, I just keep falling more and more in love with -- it's just gorgeous, exciting, inventive, magical...I think it is Elfman's greatest score, apart from his magnum opus, The Nightmare Before Christmas. I hold it as one of my favorites by him. It's in my Top 5 Elfman. For those curious, the Top 5 Elfman are (in no special order): 1. "Black Beauty" 2. "Edward Scissorhands" 3. "Mission: Impossible" 4. "Anywhere But Here" 5. Snap! And yes, same feeling, it really is an utterly entrancing score, wonderfully melancholy and memorable thematic material but with just the right touch of warmth when needed, gently understated (without being dull) but with moments of heightened drama as required. But something always kept me at arms length. Then, I picked up a copy of the LLL expanded edition (it might have been in a sale) and was amazed at the quality of the tracks that weren't on the first release. The Fire...Wow!! Some truly exceptional cues that really changed my mind about the score.
