Hmmmm. I'm not normally an Elfman fan. I find a sameness in too much of his music. (can't stand anything similar to Men in Black) Is this worth checking out? Is it different from his newer music?

It's nothing like his modern, sampled, percussive output since Mission: Impossible. It's written and orchestrated in a similar vein to Sommersby and to a lesser extent, Delores Claiborne.

Along with EDWARD SCISSORHANDS this is one of the most gorgeous scores composed by Elfman. Also close by is SOMMERSBY. These two feature sad and drop dead beautiful melodies and colorful orchestrations.(I have never heard music convey the nuance of horse in musical terms and here these are very distinct) We all took a second glance when we heard it the first time around as it was a clear departure from Elfman's BATMAN/DARKMAN styles.

For those who never purchased it or never even heard it should get this right away as a blind purchase. You will be thankful that you did. The original cd went OOP pretty early and it was great to LLL have it back in print and expanded with lovely notes, packaging and bonus tracks. I still also enjoy the edited versions on the OST and they make for quick fun.

I think this was Elfman's best period (1988 - 1994) with Beelejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batmans, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sommersby, Black Beauty...

I wonder if "Sommersby" will be among Quartet's Friday releases ?
What a treat that would be !

I actually love this score more than Edward Scissorhands. I think Edward blew me away more at first (the oohing choir), but for some reason I got a bit tired of it over the course of the years. Black Beauty, on the other hand, I just keep falling more and more in love with -- it's just gorgeous, exciting, inventive, magical...I think it is Elfman's greatest score, apart from his magnum opus, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

In a nutshell. Love Edward, but Black Beauty is the one that now gets the most play around here. However, if we turn our attention to Dolores....

Oh my yes, "black Beauty" is indeed a beautiful score and I think one of his unquestionable best scores. I hold it as one of my favorites by him. It's in my Top 5 Elfman.

For those curious, the Top 5 Elfman are (in no special order):

1. "Black Beauty"
2. "Edward Scissorhands"
3. "Mission: Impossible"
4. "Anywhere But Here"
5. "Family Dog" (that special from Amazing Stories)

Playing this today for the first time in forever and reminded how lovely it is.

Snap! And yes, same feeling, it really is an utterly entrancing score, wonderfully melancholy and memorable thematic material but with just the right touch of warmth when needed, gently understated (without being dull) but with moments of heightened drama as required. It was one of those those scores after his more quirky earlier efforts when Elfman's more serious and subtle side started to emerge in the mid to late 90s).

I just scored this for $12CAD and was spinning it last night - love that last word from Jeff Bond's Liner notes too - being on a horse just once lol.

I never truly warmed to the original CD issue of this score and I tend to love anything by Elfman, no matter what mode of scoring he is in.
But something always kept me at arms length.
Then, I picked up a copy of the LLL expanded edition (it might have been in a sale) and was amazed at the quality of the tracks that weren't on the first release. The Fire...Wow!!
Some truly exceptional cues that really changed my mind about the score.
I like it much better now.

A lovely score, one of his Top 10 best (in my personal opinion). Highly recommended. Make sure to get it if it's still available, people. :-)

Not only one of Elfman's Top 10 (Top 5, I'd say), but one of the most gorgeous scores of all time. Rivaled only by Edward Scissorhands on the heartstring-plucking scale.
