RANDY EDELMAN. If there's been a discussion here about this fine composer lately, it slipped past me. I first became aware of him through his gorgeous scores for DRAGONHEART and GETTYSBURG, and would go on to buy the soundtrack CDs for THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (with Trevor Jones), THE QUEST, and CITIZEN X, along with some compilations, such as THE BIG PICTURE by the late great Erich Kunzel, who does an amazing job with the Main Theme from GETTYSBURG and love the guitar in the middle of it, and his performance of the DRAGONHEART Finale is also quite thrilling.

I'm sure other contributors here can give us more examples of the music of this fine composer, such as WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, GHOSTBUSTERS, BEETHOVEN'S 5TH, LEAP YEAR, and a remake of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. Incidentally, there's 76 minutes of music on Edelman's LEAP YEAR soundtrack, which is intriguing, although size doesn't much matter -- it's the quality of the music that's more important than the quantity.

He gets a lot of flack, which I'm sure you'll see, but I like him. He excels at those anthemic cues, you have to admit.

My faves: DRAGON:THE BRUCE LEE STORY- 1st score of his I heard, love the film too. It really captured Lee's 'heart'

DIABOLIQUE- classic thriller suspense, elegant, erotic, eerie

Looking forward to meeting him in LA in three weeks at Fans of Film Music 4!

A favorite of mine I don't hear much about: DOWN PERISCOPE. Fine score with a terrific main theme.

A few of the Randy Edelman threads have been revived in the last couple of months and I have expressed my love for a few of Edelman's scores. I have been a fan for years. You have already mentioned Gettysburg (amazing) and Dragonheart(amazing). I would also highly recommend Gods and Generals and Leap Year. They are two adverse scores but equally stunning. Leap Year is considered a chick flick and I love the movie as well. However, the score is not "chick flicky" at all. It is a lengthy score that can be enjoyed with or without having seen the movie.

I may take flak for this but if someone wants a light and sweet score that is "chick flicky" but very enjoyable, I recommend "27 Dresses". I did not care for the movie but found the score to be light and fun. Sometimes it is nice to have something like this to listen to.

His score for Passion Of Mind is wonderfully romantic.

I happened to like 27 Dresses, although I'm a big James Marsden fan (less so for Katherine Heigl). I'll have to check out the music for it, although it didn't make much of an impression on me when I saw the film on cable. Thanks.

Lest we forget: the theme from "The Adventures of Brisco Couny, Jr.".

Re: Lest we forget: the theme from "The Adventures of Brisco Couny, Jr.".

Are you serious? Randy Edelman wrote that? I don't think I knew that when I used to watch it years ago, or when I watched Disc One from Netflix to see if I wanted to buy it (I didn't, although Bruce Campbell, the star, was quite engaging back then, but was barely recognizable in his role in "Oz The Great And Powerful"). Thank you.

Thanks Ron. I am happy to hear you are a fan as well. Personally, I am not a Katherine Heigl fan and James Marsden made the film somewhat palatable for me as well. I understand the James Marsden gives a very good performance as JFK in the recent release of The Butler. I have not seen it yet though.

And speaking of James Marsden, did you see him in the black cast remake of "Death At A Funeral," where he plays the white boyfriend who is given drugs instead of simple tranquilizers when he has a panic attack about meeting his girlfriend's family? He goes up on the roof and takes off all his clothes in a very memorable scene, although the British original is, for me, much better. But I actually enjoyed the remake and bought a fairly cheap copy of it on Blu-ray.

A fine composer who like a lot of modern day composers don't get the respect they deserve.

I call him The Godfather of Media Ventures.
His anthemic style and preference to coat the orchestra with synths gave Mr Zimmer too many ideas and we've been suffering ever since! wink
He can write a great theme and I have quite a few CD's by him, many of which I still play and enjoy (Kindergarten Cop, Distinguished Gentleman, Gettysburg, Angels In The Outfield, Dragon/Bruce Lee, Dragon Heart, 6 Days, 7 Nights). I also have his Mummy 3 CD, which I bought for ONE POUND, but haven't played it yet.
I'd also buy a release of Ghostbusters II in seconds.

If I had to single out one particular cue/track from any of his film scores (that I have represented in my CD collection) that I actually enjoy more than the rest. I think it would be his Speed Boat Race from Gone Fishin'

I think you mentioned "fine composer" twice too often. wink

I too like the theme of GETTYSBURG very much, but the actual incidental music, as is true of ALL of the incidental music he has "written", is rather undistinguished. That's certainly the case with THE LAST MOHICAN, where Edelman's contributions so roundly falter in comparison to Trevor Jones's (the latter's borrowings notwithstanding), or THE MUMMY 3, so trivial and simplistic a score as to insult Goldsmith's original, and Silvestri's follow-up as well.

I mentioned Down Periscope in a previous thread. Kind of surprised at the time that Varese didn't release a sdtk back in '98?

It may be a comedy but I believe some fo the score has some cool action tracks.

I would buy this in an instant.
